Originally founded in 2003 as the Active Transportation Collaboratory, the purpose of the Health and Community Design Lab is to assess and convey how community design, including the location and form of transportation investments and land development actions, impacts: travel, time use, and activity patterns; air quality; climate change; energy consumption; and public health.

General information

RESEARCH Through cutting edge research projects, such as SMARTRAQ, NEWPATH, CHANGE, and the Metro Vancouver Walkability Index, the Lab examines how different urban built environments impact a variety of quality of life factors, including; physical activity, diet, access to food, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. PUBLICATIONS Translating research into practice is an essential step to creating healthy, vibrant and sustainable communities. The Lab conveys research findings to different audiences (policymakers, practicing planners, health professionals, and the general public) through a variety of publications, including reports, presentations, and academic journal articles. PARTNERSHIPS The Lab collaborates on projects and initiatives with a range of partners in academic, government, non-profit, and private sectors. As a member of the Health & Community Design Collaborative, the Lab works closely with Metro Vancouver, TransLink, BC Health Services Authority, Fraser Health Authority, and Vancouver Coastal Health, to enable, support, and maintains the development of healthy, low-carbon and equitable communities across British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. EVENTS Through workshops, symposia, and conference sessions featuring international experts, the Lab provides innovative, educational opportunities for planning and health practitioners across North America. TEACHING Educating future planning and public health professionals about the linkages between urban form and health is central to the mission of the Lab. The Director of the Lab, Dr. Lawrence Frank teaches at the University of British Columbia’s School of Community and Regional Planning and School of Population and Public Health.
