Sports Cardiology BC

Sports Cardiology BC SportsCardiologyBC aims to make the incredibly beneficial act of exercising even safer through resea Exercise is unbelievably beneficial.

The substantial amount of data indicating that exercise is a preventive measure for all measures of mental and physical health is truly remarkable. Unfortunately there is a higher risk of sudden cardiac death among athletes than non-athletes due to the strain put on the heart. This risk is present in young athletes (under 35) due to congenital heart disease and in masters athletes (over 35) due to coronary heart disease. We plan to research these two categories of athletes and understand what the prevalence of these diseases are in our population and how we can help them continue to exercise in a safe and effective manner. We hope to reduce the risk associated with exercise through our four established pillars of:
- Screening
- Education
- Advocacy
- Research

What does a stress test actually tell you?

A lot more than you think.

During a treadmill or bike test, we track how your heart performs under pressure—not just at rest 🏃‍♀️

♥️ It can uncover silent heart issues
♥️ Help guide safe return to training
♥️ Reveal how your blood pressure, ECG, and breathing respond to effort

Stress testing is especially important for those with symptoms like chest pain or palpitations—or for athletes looking for safe clearance after a health event.

At SportsCardiologyBC, we tailor testing to you, interpreting results through a performance + safety lens for our research projects.

Why is Cardiorespiratory Fitness (CRF) a vital sign?

Because it tells us how strong your heart, lungs, and muscles are—together—when it matters most: under physical stress.

♥️ Higher CRF = lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, cognitive decline, and even early death.

♥️ Even 150 minutes of walking a week can boost your CRF and improve long-term health.

♥️ At SportsCardiologyBC, we measure CRF using CPET to personalize your fitness and recovery plans. It’s never too late to get fitter—and healthier.

Dr. Moulson of SportsCardiologyBC is leading the Canadian arm of the ORCCA Registry — the largest study of its kind, tracking young athletes (14–34) with cardiac conditions to better understand the impacts of sport, mental health, and quality of life.

Your story could help shape future return-to-play guidelines — and keep athletes in the game safely.
