Yes, breast density is an independent risk factor for breast cancer. You can see on slide 3 that it also gets harder to see a cancerous lesion on imaging with higher breast density.

Factors that affect breast density: genetics, race (more common in African and Asian women), hormone replacement therapy, increased BMI, and alcohol. Higher breast density is also more common in younger women. Having kids, breastfeeding and going into menopause can also influence breast density.

When it comes to screening tests, there is a lower sensitivity with screening mammography as breast density increases … women with dense breasts may need other testing like MRI.

Biopsy is generally not recommended unless an abnormality is found on a clinical physical exam or on imaging.
