We’ve been getting asked our thoughts on this viral article that was released this week, so here’s what we think! 👀
• There have been heavy metals found in protein powders for a long time - specifically vegan protein powders. This is not a new finding.
• Vegan and chocolate flavoured protein powders are usually highest in heavy metals. This is related to soil, water, or harvest-related contamination. 🌱🍫
• The consumer report article lists specific brands - the high heavy metal ones are all plant-based or chocolate flavoured.
• Keep in mind many things in our daily diet also have heavy metals, like brown rice, leafy greens, fish, spices, dark chocolate, etc. 🍣
• If you want to include a protein powder in your diet, look for third party tested, reputable brands.
• In general, unflavoured whey protein powder is much lower in heavy metals. Avoid additives and flavourings as much as possible. ❌
I know Naked Nutrition was on the list of “no no’s”, but it was their vegan mass gainer product. Which coincidentally, is one of the few products they don’t third party test 🤔 I personally use Naked Nutrition unflavored whey protein, which they do third party testing for contaminants. Transparent Labs is another brand I would look into for unflavored whey protein. If you’re looking for a vegan protein powder, I would recommend avoiding chocolate flavoured brands and avoiding rice-based proteins.
