Q&A with Fiona Vol. 27
Q: Is it OK to use a block/strap for Ashtanga Yoga practice?

Fiona: At Sharath’s 2009 teacher training, a student asked him what to do if a person cannot stand and is unable to do sun salutations. Sharath’s responded as if the answer was obvious—-Start on the floor. For me, I interpreted this as - If a person cannot start with the traditional form, figure out a way so that they can practice! Make it work for them.
Over many years, I have modified practices for broken arms, legs, knees and for people who had back injuries or hamstring injuries and could not bend forward. The practice, in these cases looked different. Sometimes, I had to shift something so a form could be created, sometimes I needed a prop to balance out a broken side with an unbroken side. The form had to shift to allow for practice. But the liberating moment for me was to witness someone going from broken back to whole and using their practice as a tool in healing.

Q&A with Fiona Vol. 26
Q: Has practice changed as you have aged? Have students noticed the impact of Menopause?
Fiona: Yes! In the last month alone, several women have reached out with hormone/practice related questions.
Has my practice changed throughout hormonal fluctuations? Absolutely. Practice from my twenties, pregnancy, childbirth to householder to perimenopause and menopause, has shifted multiple times! Hormones affect us differently and, I believe, if we listen, go inside, and use the innate knowledge that we have cultivated, our practice can support us in transitions. Our practice can be a tether when we are crossing into uncharted territory. The knowledge we have accumulated combined with listening is essential as forms will come and may go. When I was an athletic teen and into my 20’s and 30’s, I pushed the boundaries of my body. When I had children, I softened so I would have energy later in the day to be a present mom for my kids! In perimenopause, everything I thought I “knew” about my body and practice, at times, disappeared into thin air. At times, my body felt foreign, mulabandha felt wrong, my joints hurt; some days I was exhausted and others I felt like I was 20. For me, this was the phase where the yoga of listening was essential. I would tell myself just to show up without judgment regardless of how practice looked on the outside. The practice is an elixir to my soul and my emotional being so yes I will practice ashtanga forever even if the forms change. The one constant for me has been breath, mulabandha & drishti and so when practising is challenging, I remind myself of those healing constants. I believe the practice is a practice for life if I listen, show up, breathe with awareness and trust my innate wisdom. Practices that are short, long, strong, weak, flexible or stiff - they are all “good” practices if I show up and mindfully breathe. And it’s the repetition that allows the magic of the practice to transform our lives.
I am very passionate about this subject and doing research for an upcoming course for women on practicing for life. Email me if you want to chat more about this!

Our Story

At Ashtanga Yoga Vancouver we are grateful for the inspiration and timeless teachings of Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois. From a powerful lineage, ashtanga yoga, when practiced regularly, inquisitively, and with devotion, is a powerful seed that can transform both our individual experiences and the lives of others. The practice of yoga teaches us to transcend patterns that no longer serve us so we can see ourselves as we are. When we elevate ourselves, we can then elevate others.
