Your front-end team is often overlooked, yet they're the most vital part of your practice. Remember, it's a people business. Focus on your team, reps, consultants, marketing, and especially the patients. A people-first approach is the winning strategy.

In this solo episode of DentalBytes, Marc reflects on the journey of building the podcast, the lessons learned from years of conversations across the dental industry, and what really drives successful practices.

This episode explores why dentistry remains, above all, a people business — from the patient experience to the front desk, from trusted mentors to the teams and partners that help practices grow. Marc dives into the often-overlooked importance of front-end staff, the value of strong recall and review systems, and how the right technology can be a true game changer when it fits the practice and the team behind it. He also shares why education, communication, and investing in people are still at the heart of long-term success in dentistry.

A thoughtful, honest episode for anyone in dentistry trying to build something meaningful while keeping people at the center of it all.

Solo episode today on DentalBytes 🎙️

After years of conversations across dentistry, one thing keeps standing out to me:

This is a people business.

In this episode, I reflect on what I’ve learned through the podcast journey, the importance of mentorship, why front-end teams deserve far more credit, and how the right systems for recall, reviews, and technology can completely change the trajectory of a practice.

At the end of the day, growth is not just about production.
It’s about people, trust, communication, and creating an experience that truly serves the patient.

It’s PDC season—and time is flying. In this quick, last-minute catch-up, I’m joined by Dr. Bruce Ward, President of the Canadian Dental Association, and a longtime leader within the Pacific Dental Conference organizing community.

We start with what Dr. Ward has been seeing on the national stage, including recent collaboration with dental association leadership from the U.S. and Mexico, and how Canada’s Dental Care Plan is being viewed internationally.

Then we dive into the heart of it: PDC—why it remains such a uniquely balanced conference with education, exhibit-floor energy, and a social atmosphere that brings teams together. Dr. Ward breaks down what’s new for this year, including the scale of the meeting (hundreds of sessions, a sold-out floor, and thousands expected to attend) and the behind-the-scenes logistics that make the show work.

We also touch on the broader shift happening in healthcare: the growing recognition that oral health connects directly to overall health, and how collaboration across professions is becoming more real (and more necessary) than ever.

If you’re heading to PDC—whether you’re a practice owner, a team member, or a first-timer—this episode is a great primer on what to expect, what’s changing, and how to make the most of the biggest dental meeting in the country.

Dr. Bruce Ward shares insights into the essential elements that make the PDC exceptional. It's a delicate balance: Continuing Education (CE) and coursework, combined with invaluable socializing. Remove any one of these pillars, and the entire experience falters. Ensuring quality CE attendance is paramount, which is why we ensure the meeting hall is always full, with lunch provided and drinks at the end of the day. These efforts contribute to highly attended sessions.

The PDC 2026 exhibit hall is officially sold out with 230 companies filling 600 booths. PDC has a substantial waiting list, but capacity has been reached for this year. We're anticipating around 14,000 attendees for what promises to be a major event.

Our eyes perceive only a tiny fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum. X-rays help bridge that gap, transforming invisible data into visible information.
Now, AI is taking detection and radiography to the next level — helping identify threats like cancer earlier, often long before they become serious. The potential is incredible.

Premiering Sunday, Feb 22 at 8:00 PM PST, this episode of DentalBytes features Robert Hawkins from Aurum Group for a practical look at why the lab remains one of the most crucial pieces of modern dentistry—and how Aurum is evolving to meet the future.

Marc and Robert unpack how the lab is more than “fabrication”: it’s a clinical partner that impacts case planning, predictability, esthetics, materials selection, turnaround, and the final patient experience. As dentistry becomes more digital, the lab’s role becomes even more important—bridging technology with real-world ex*****on and quality control.

They also explore a bigger shift happening right now: the growing intersection of medicine and dentistry. Robert shares how Aurum is leaning into that direction—including the development of an imaging centre designed to elevate diagnostic inputs, strengthen treatment planning, and help clinicians see more clearly before they treat.

From there, they dig into how labs are streamlining workflows, improving communication, and reducing friction from intake to delivery. Robert breaks down what’s real (and what’s not yet) with emerging tech like 3D printed crowns, where ceramics still lead, and how innovation is being applied responsibly—not just for speed, but for outcomes.

You’ll also hear about Aurum’s investment in training and collaboration through the Hyo Maier Centre for Dental Excellence and hands-on “Innovation Tours” designed to strengthen digital workflows between practices and technicians. If you want a grounded, forward-looking conversation about where labs—and dentistry—are headed, this one’s for you.

The shift toward medical–dental integration is growing fast. Your mouth isn’t separate from the rest of your body—signs in oral health can sometimes correlate with broader health conditions, including cardiovascular risk. It’s wild how connected everything is, and it’s where dentistry is heading next.

Joined by Josh DeVries (CEO & Co-Founder, Intiveo) to unpack why “patient engagement” has become commoditized—and why the real win in 2026 is designing the full patient experience: acquisition, engagement/loyalty, and appointment completion. We break down the ex*****on gap inside practices, how to spot bottlenecks that quietly kill production, why Josh’s concept of “micro-agreements” reduces friction, and what it really takes to get patients to show up prepared (hint: it’s more touchpoints than you think). We also get practical on what Intiveo is built for—automating, tailoring, and reporting on key points in the patient journey , reaching patients through the channels they actually use (text/voice/email) , and even improving communication with non-patients like parents/caregivers and referring practices through Intiveo Connect —so practices can reduce no-shows, protect chair time, and deliver an experience patients can feel.
