Nervous system regulation isn’t just about “staying calm” It’s your system’s ability to shift between states in response to what’s actually happening.
The autonomic nervous system constantly assesses safety and threat. When it detects threat, sympathetic activation increases heart rate, shallows breathing, tenses muscles. When safety is present, the parasympathetic branch allows the system to rest, digest, and repair.
Dysregulation happens when the system gets stuck in one state or swings between extremes without settling. The body stays in defense mode even when the threat has passed, or shuts down when activation would be appropriate.
Slow breathe , walking in nature, humming or singing and movement are all physiological tools that engage specific neural pathways to help your system recalibrate.
