Feeling like your muscles are stiff and achy? Then maybe you should try foam rolling!

Fascia is a tough tissue that surrounds your muscles and bones. In a healthy state, they should be relaxed, stretching and moving with no restriction. Working out can cause inflammation in fascia, making them tight and restricted.

Many people believe foam rolling relieves pain through self-myofascial relief (SMR). Fascia is the connective tissue that covers and supports your muscles. According to this theory, foam rolling massages fascia to break down “knots” and increase your muscles’ range of motion (ROM). However, research has not confirmed that this is why foam rolling relieves pain.

Another theory suggests that foam rolling is really targeting your nervous system. Foam roller applies pressure to receptors, stimulating the nervous system, and reducing stress hormones, like cortisol, to relieve pain. Some research backs this theory, suggesting foam rolling may work by suppressing pain centers and not by “loosening” muscle tissue.

Popular thought is that foam rolling breaks up adhesions, reduces stiffness, decreases soreness, increases blood flow and reduces tissue tension, leading to improved recovery and performance. Check out our post for the different tools you can use to roll!

Happy Friday!! Just a lil reminder for your fitness goals that even tiny progress is better than none :) I lose sight of my goals when they’re too intense, and sometimes all I need is to take a step back and realize that my own daunting goals are halting my progress😊

Gluteal muscles consist of gluteus minimus, gluteus medius and the well-known gluteus
maximus. Gluteus minimus is the smallest and deepest of the gluteal muscles. It can be found tightly wrapped around the hip joint. Gluteus medius spans the outer surface of the pelvis, and Gluteus Maximus overlays all gluteal muscles and gives your body shape. Together these muscles help provide hip joint movements and provide shock absorption while walking or running.

Glute activation helps improve muscle strength, power and reduces injury risk. Activating the glutes can help improve overall performance in activities and sports such as weightlifting, running and soccer. Weak glutes can lead to low back, hip, and patellofemoral pain.

Check out our posts for exercises to work on those glutes!

Sitting for prolonged periods is a common cause of upper back pain. Even sitting in proper posture for extended periods is taxing on the body. Prolonged muscle contractions to ‘hold’ you up will eventually fatigue and tighten/stiffen up causing pain.
Listen to your body, and take frequent movement breaks.
Check out the post for some tips that would help with your back tightness!
