At 90 years old, Maria has been cooking Italian food longer than most bringing a lifetime of experience and flavour to her dishes. “Enoteca Maria is a place where we invite grandmothers from all over the world in to cook their traditional dishes. Nonna Maria has been working here for about 10 years now, and she lights up the place as soon as she walks in the door. She’s 90 years old and runs around like she’s 16.”

Today, Bon Appétit spends the day with Nonna Maria, one of the resident grandma chefs at Enoteca Maria on Staten Island. At 90 years old, Maria has been cook...

"As we get older, there are more options, not fewer. A good example is Beethoven, who was deaf at the end of his life, yet the last string quartets he wrote were amazing. He had to delve deeply into his memory bank and his mixture of things. Mixing and matching becomes much more possible with age."

The famed choreographer Twyla Tharp, 78, wakes up every morning knowing anything is possible. Here's how she embraces change and keeps moving.

“After you have exhausted what there is in business, politics, conviviality, love, and so on — have found that none of these finally satisfy, or permanently wear — what remains? Nature remains; to bring out from their torpid recesses, the affinities of a man or woman with the open air, the trees, fields, the changes of seasons — the sun by day and the stars of heaven by night.” — Walt Whitman

This weekend as we celebrate Chanukah together with friends and family, let us reflect upon the blessings in our lives and continue to seek peace within ourselves — in other words, doing our share of work to make the world a more hospitable place. Sending an abundance of love, light, warmth, and joy your way during this season of miracles!

Dale Schroeder was just a humble carpenter from Iowa who lived a very simple life. He never married, had no children, and worked in the same company for 67 long years. He owned only two pairs of jeans, one for work and one for church.

But behind this quiet life, Dale was doing something extraordinary. He saved almost $3 million over his lifetime, not for himself, but for others. When he passed away in 2005, his savings were used to send 33 students to college, students who could never afford education otherwise. Today, those students have become doctors, teachers, engineers, and therapists. They proudly call themselves “Dale’s Kids” and carry his legacy forward.

Dale Schroeder proved that you don’t need fame or luxury to change the world, just a big heart and kindness. A true reminder that ordinary people can create extraordinary legacies.

"I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow; but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing." - Agatha Christie
