Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility

Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility Hearing healthcare and communication solutions for people who are Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing.

The Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility is passionate about creating a society in which Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and Hearing individuals can interact freely without barriers. For those with hearing loss and deafness, communication becomes challenging, affecting any sphere of daily life, from work to home to school and community. Wavefront Centre provides supportive programs and services that focus on the strengths and talents of Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing individuals rather than barriers. Wavefront Centre works to create opportunities for individuals to gain employment, participate in communities, and increase social connectedness with family and friends. We also provide public education to increase awareness and understanding of topics related to Deaf, Deafblind and Hard of Hearing.

Earlier this week, Wavefront Centre partnered with the Vancouver Police Department to deliver a workshop on accessible communication with people who are Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing.

Held over two mornings at VPD’s Cambie location, the sessions brought together officers and civilian staff to build practical ASL skills and strengthen inclusive communication strategies.

This work is an important step toward breaking down barriers and supporting more effective, respectful interactions across our communities.

Thank you to all participants for your engagement and commitment to accessibility.

: Access in the 1980s

As part of our year-long celebration of Wavefront Centre’s 70th anniversary, we’re sharing photos that highlight the technologies and everyday moments that supported communication access over the years.

This photo from 1985, taken at the Burnaby Public Library Service Branch, shows a man using a magnifying lens while browsing shelves filled with cassette and video tapes, technology that once played an important role in accessing information and media.

Fun fact: the person in this photo is now part of the Wavefront Centre team today. Does anyone recognize him? :)

Do you recognize what he might be looking for, or remember using collections like this? We’d love to hear your memories. Please share in the comments.

Sound should never be a barrier to participation.

At The Westdale in Hamilton, Ontario, Wavefront Centre hosted a community event showcasing how audio accessibility is transforming live performance experiences.

Guests explored live demonstrations of Bettear and Auracast™, streaming high-quality audio directly to smartphones, hearing aids, cochlear implants, or headphones. No extra equipment required.

With special guest comedian D.J. Demers, the evening highlighted how accessible technology helps people:
- Engage fully in performances
- Participate in community events
- Feel welcomed and included

This is what community access looks like.

Our Story

Wavefront Centre is unique because we are the only organization in B.C. that houses resources to assist with every aspect of a person’s life under one roof. These resources include audiology services, interpreting services, employment counselling services, job finding clubs, a job resource centre, a seniors outreach program, a communication devices showroom, informative classes, and community presentations. Wavefront Centre proudly believes in serving the community as a non-profit organization. This means that any money we earn from our social enterprises, such as our hearing aid clinic, goes back into the community to provide free programs. With nearly six decades of experience, Wavefront Centre serves almost 12,000 Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals every year. We have enjoyed a proven track record of success and thousands of clients who have benefited from our services. No other agency meets the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing British Columbians like we do.
