What to Do When People Keep Crossing Your Boundaries
'I've told them my boundary multiple times, but they keep ignoring it. What's wrong with me?'
Nothing. Nothing is wrong with you.
Here's what's really happening:
• Some people weren't taught to respect others' limits
• Your boundary might be threatening their comfort zone
• They're testing to see if you'll actually enforce it
• You might be stating boundaries without consequences
The hard truth: A boundary without enforcement is just a suggestion.
In therapy, we work on:
🔹 Distinguishing between requests and boundaries
🔹 Developing your 'boundary enforcement muscle'
🔹 Managing the anxiety that comes with holding firm
🔹 Grieving relationships that can't respect your limits
You're not responsible for making others comfortable with your boundaries. You're only responsible for maintaining them.
Some people will respect your fence. Others will keep trying to climb it. Both responses tell you important information.
