We are incredibly proud of very own Dr Andrew Habib who is with the Canadian Parasoccer Team for their World Cup in Spain!

After a decent performance but tough loss against Brasil, the men won their second group stage game against Japan 2-0!

What is SIS? 🧠

Second Impact Syndrome occurs when you get a second hit to the head before a previous concussion is fully healed. It can cause long-term and permanent effects to the brain, even with a generally healthy individual.

Some symptoms of SIS include fatigue, headache, disorientation, nausea, vomiting, and feeling slow or “in a fog”. Long-term symptoms can include mental/cognitive impairment, muscle spasms/rigidity, and in severe cases, coma or brain death.

How can you prevent SIS?

The best prevention is to avoid going back into sports and physical activity too early. Following the return to play guidelines and protocols can help prevent further brain damage by significantly decreasing the chance for an impact to the head. If you sustain a bad hit to the head and notice any concussion symptoms, listen to your body and remove yourself from play. Continuing to play greatly increases your risk or getting a second hit.
