When you’re planning to start eating healthy, bread is often one of the first foods you want to exclude from your diet. But when it comes to carbs, grains are anything but all the same, and while giving up white bread might help you shed a few pounds, cutting out whole grain bread can actually dep...

40%-50% of newborn babies have little white bumps on their faces. Sometimes these pimples stay with us until adulthood. The good news is it’s perfectly normal to have them. Just for you, we’ve gathered everything in one place, so there’s no need to frantically surf the web for answers.

Jerry Windle, a single gay man, was constantly told by people that he would never be a father. He hardly believed himself that he would ever become a dad, but one day his life changed completely. His parental journey seems like a fairytale come to life, and it’s proof that a merciful heart can win...

Many of us are used to thinking about diets as something we do short term without much enjoyment, but I designed the Pegan Diet not to be something we go “on” and “off” of -- The Pegan Diet is rather a way of life. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The goal is not to be perfect, but to follow a simple set of principles that can help us stay healthy. It’s about doing your best and letting go of food stress and anxiety.
⁣⁣
I want you to eat real, whole foods. Sometimes that means following a recipe, and other times that means using what you have to make what you can. As you become more familiar with the Pegan Diet, shopping for the right foods and creating your own healthy meals will become second nature. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Remember, that true health isn’t just about losing a few pounds or about the absence of chronic disease, it’s about feeling good, showing up, and giving your highest gifts to the world.

Friend power is so much more powerful than willpower. ⁣

Don’t underestimate the ability of a group of people or even one person to support you. Find people who want to get healthy or who have achieved what you want to achieve. ⁣

If your family and friends are not on board, tell them that you need this time to take care of your health, and that you hope they will support your decision. ⁣
And you don’t have to go at it alone. Enlist the help of at least one friend. Every body needs a buddy. ⁣

Black, Hispanic, and Native American farmers are more likely to lease land than own it and they generate less wealth than their white counterparts. Hispanic people are also disproportionately more likely to be farm laborers; jobs that come with significant health and safety issues and very little pay. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
These are serious racial and ethnic inequalities happening in our current day and age, but they stem from the long-standing structural discrimination that our agricultural system is rooted in. Post Civil War, freed slaves were awarded land under General William T. Sherman’s Special Field Order No. 15. By June of 1865, 40,000 freedmen had settled on 400,000 acres. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
By 1920, there were 925,000 Black-owned farms, representing about 14% of all farms in the United States. But since then that number has only continued to drop—today, African Americans make up only 2% of our farmers and 1% of rural landowners. This loss of land occurred due to discriminatory government laws and funding (like federal Homestead Acts) as well as a lack of legal and financial resources due to systemic racism. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
This decline of Black, Brown, and Native farmers has had far-reaching negative impacts. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
It means: ⁣⁣⁣
A decline of wealth and continued generational financial hardship. ⁣⁣⁣
A disconnection from history and cultural practices that connect people to the land. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
That these communities don’t have access to the same fresh, healthy foods as predominantly white communities, something that we’re recognizing goes far beyond food deserts and instead represents food apartheid. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
We know that your zip code is more important than your genetic code in determining your risk of disease and death and that 70% of deaths are caused by chronic disease—mostly the result of our toxic food system. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Lack of access to land and fresh food is a form of oppression and it’s setting communities up for inherited illness and strife. ⁣⁣

Despite what popular magazines might say, if you think you can exercise your way to weight loss, I am sorry to say you are in for a big disappointment.⁣

Using exercise to lose weight without changing your diet is asking for failure. You can change your diet and lose weight, but if you exercise and keep your diet the same, you may gain some muscle, improve endurance, and be healthier overall, but you won’t shed many pounds.⁣

However, combining a whole, unprocessed diet with the right exercise does wonders for your health. I don’t want you to get the impression that I don’t think exercise is important.⁣

In fact, if I could put something in a pill that would reverse almost every chronic disease, it would be exercise. If exercise could be put in a pill, it would be the biggest blockbuster medication of all time.⁣

Here are 7 reasons why exercise is still extremely important to our overall health:⁣

1. Better insulin sensitivity.⁣
2. Reduced stress.⁣
3. Improved brain health.⁣
4. Reduced risk for chronic disease.⁣
5. Enhanced detoxification.⁣
6. Slowed aging process.⁣
7. Improved sexual function.

Think of magnesium as the relaxation mineral. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
You must have magnesium for your cells to make energy, for many different chemical pumps to work, to stabilize membranes, and to help muscles relax.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
The reason we are so deficient is simple: Many of us eat a diet that contains practically no magnesium — a highly-processed, refined diet that is based mostly on white flour, meat, and dairy (all of which have no magnesium).⠀⁣

Including the following in your diet as often as you can:⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Kelp, wheat bran, wheat germ, almonds, cashews, buckwheat, brazil nuts, dulse, filberts, millet, pecans, walnuts, rye, tofu, soy beans, brown rice, figs, dates, collard greens, shrimp, avocado, parsley, beans, dandelion greens, and garlic.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
I also highly recommend a daily magnesium supplement.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
The most absorbable forms are magnesium citrate, glycinate taurate, or aspartate, although magnesium bound to Kreb cycle chelates (malate, succinate, fumarate) are also good. To properly absorb magnesium we need a lot of it in our diet, plus enough vitamin B6, vitamin D, and selenium to get the job done.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Avoid magnesium carbonate, sulfate, gluconate, and oxide. They are poorly absorbed (and the cheapest and most common forms found in supplements).⠀⁣
