Lid Express

Lid Express Lid Express is a non-OHIP service for patients who want to remove benign eyelid growths. Lid Express is an initiative by Clarity Eye Institute.

It is a non-OHIP service for patients who want to remove benign eyelid growths (lumps and bumps) to improve the appearance of the eyelid and surrounding skin. Patients can use our simple online self-referral tool to arrange their procedure with ease.

Do NOT pick, poke or rub at your eyelid growth. Doing so can cause infection, worsen inflammation/swelling, delay healing, cause scarring, or damage the eyelid area.

DO apply a warm compress, keep the area clean and hands off, avoid makeup, and consider seeing an eye care professional for proper diagnosis and treatment if the bump persists.

When we introduced the Lid Express program, we really had a goal of making eye care more accessible, efficient, and results-driven, especially for patients who’ve felt frustrated with the traditional system.

Our surgical centre was fortunate to show Judy Sgro around our Clarity Eye facility and discuss our shared interest in solution-based thinking that ensures accessibility while delivering real results for patients. Her work toward a national strategy for eye health is helping bring attention to gaps within the system, as well as identify opportunities for better access to care. We’re so glad to have discussed such important topics together.

Engaging in meaningful discussions around eye care is a critical part in shifting the way people prioritize vision care.

Q: Is Lid Express covered by OHIP?

A: No. Lid Express is an elective surgery for benign (non-cancerous) growths that pose no risk to eye health or vision and therefore is not a service covered under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan. Patients pay out of pocket for their benign eyelid growth to be removed by an oculoplastic surgeon (an expert in eyelid plastic surgery) when opting to have their growth removed with Lid Express.

We’re excited to share that MacuMira is now available at Clarity Eye. Clarity is the first ophthalmology clinic to offer this non-invasive treatment for dry AMD in Toronto.

To mark the occasion, Clarity hosted a special event for our optometric colleagues, celebrating the launch of MacuMira and our new Low Vision Clinic, led by Dr. Maryam Taheri-Shirazi, MD. The evening featured a clinical talk from Dr. Taheri-Shirazi, insights from the MacuMira team, a live device demonstration, and a ribbon cutting to commemorate this important milestone.

Macumira uses gentle microcurrent stimulation through the eyelids to help preserve and improve vision in patients with dry age-related macular degeneration, safely, painlessly, and without surgery.

We’re proud to be part of bringing this innovative treatment to Toronto and helping improve the lives of patients living with dry AMD.

The photos you send help us make general decisions about whether you are a good candidate for surgery, but they are not a replacement for an individualized in-person assessment. Your surgeon will complete a thorough consultation on the day of your appointment to determine if surgery is in your best interest.

Stubborn chalazion that’s not responding to a warm compress? You might be trying to decide between IPL or surgery. While both are effective ways to treat your chalazion, some growths can respond well to IPL whereas others will require surgical removal. If you’re on the fence, talk with your optometrist about which option best suits your needs.

Surgical removal is a great choice if you’re looking for a quick way to have your benign chalazion removed in a single treatment and with minimal downtime. With the online self-referral process used at Lid Express, a surgeon can review your case without needing a referral making it even more of an efficient process.

IPL is a great non-surgical option but will typically require a course of treatments to manage your chalazion. This treatment works well on softer, smaller and less persistent chalazia. It is less invasive than surgery as it does not require any cutting of the skin. It’s also a really good post-surgery therapy to help prevent subsequent chalazia development.

Are you an optometrist offering IPL at your clinic? We’d love to hear from you about working together.

Although it might be tempting to try anything and everything possible to get rid of a stye, you may end up further irritating the area, adding more contaminants around your eyelid area, and likely even extending the time it takes for the bump to go away.

The best at-home treatment? A warm compress.
