I specialize in custom casting sculptures (framed Shadow Boxes of children’s hands and feet). If it is your desire to capture and preserve some of life's most precious moments, you will want to consider a life cast of your infant's or toddler's hands and feet. We use medical grade Dental Alginate to do our castings of children’s hands and feet. Dental Alginate is a casting material used by your dentist or your orthodontist to make impressions of your teeth. Dental Alginate is hypoallergenic and even safe to eat. Alginate powder activates in warm, bath-temperature water, so to cast your child’s hands & feet we pour the mixture into a container and then immerse the whole hand or foot for approximately 40 seconds as the alginate turns from a warm liquid to a gel-like solid (similar to Jello-O). This is all it takes to get perfect impressions of children’s hands and feet, right down to the smallest detail. We know babies don't stay still and a little bit of movement won't impact the mould. After the mould has set, your work is done (and ours is just beginning). A special cement for statues is carefully poured into the mould to produce a beautiful, exact replica cast of your child’s precious hand or foot. We then dry, finish and treat each cast so it can be professionally framed in a custom Shadow Box. Memory Lane Studios
