We strongly believe that the human-animal bond can confer many health benefits for children on the autism spectrum, and for their families too!
Whether it is a trained service dog or through Horseback riding, there is scientific evidence supporting the positive influence of human-animal interaction on our children.
One of these being the posibility to reduce loneliness and provide needed companionship for them. Researches have found that the fundamentally nonjudgmental natural of pets and their unconditional love are often cited by individuals with autism as reasons for their meaningful relationship.
We highly encourage our families to seek activities that safely include the interaction with pets and animals in general. 💙

🎄The Holiday season can be an overstimulating time of year for someone on the autistic spectrum. Some will appreciate the new high impact sensory stimulation, for others this can be a struggle.

❄️Some people with autism find change difficult. Changes to routines, environment and social expectations can mean that Christmas can be a confusing and challenging time.

☃️These are some of the challenges children with ASD might have to face during the next couple of weeks.➡️

💡Rebound Therapy is extremely beneficial at targeting and challenging the vestibular system with the movement of the trampoline bed and the individual’s movement on the dynamic surface.

📎Postural, ocular-motor, and visceral responses, all of which are compensatory responses of the vestibular system, are challenged and strengthened in Rebound Therapy.

Bouncing, either actively or passively, provides a considerable amount of proprioceptive input. This is vital for participants who require high levels of proprioceptive input to know where their body is in space, as well as for self-regulation.

Looking to improve your child’s balance? Check out Rebound Therapy at The Crystal Ladder Learning Centre Vaughan and find out about more benefits💙

Motor Planning is the ability to conceive, plan, and carry out a skilled, non-habitual motor act in the correct sequence from beginning to end.

Motor planning difficulties are caused by problems processing sensory information and poor neural connections in the brain. In order to have efficient motor planning, an individual must be able to organiza sensory input from his body, have adequate body percept and be able to move around his environment.

Difficulty with sensory processing can lead to poor motor planning for fine, gross, and oral motor tasks (such as handwriting, jumping, and forming words, respectively).

Finding nonverbal ways to connect💡💙
Connecting with a child with ASD can be challenging, but you don’t need to talk, or even touch, in order to communicate and bond. You communicate by the way you look at your child, by the tone of your voice, your body language, and possibly the way you touch your child. Your child is also communicating with you, even if he or she never speaks. You just need to creat your own personal language.

Look for nonverbal cues. If you are observant and aware you can learn to pick up on the nonverbal cues that children with ASF use to communicate. Pay attention to the kinds of sounds they make, their facial expressions, and the gestures they use when they’re tired, hungry, or want something.

Communication is key💙

If your child suffers from anxiety, he may experience strong internal sensations of tension. This can include a racing heart, muscular tensions, sweating and stomachache. Intense anxiety can result in repetitive behaviors that appear to serve no function, such as shredding paper or clothing.

Neurofeedback Brain Training is one option available at our centres that helps reduce anxiety.

09/05/2021

Our brains are constantly taking information from our senses. Children don’t always have the same reactions to situations and stimuli. But their responses tend to fall into one of these two categories.

Sensory seeking- children underreact to sensory input or need more of it to function💙

Sensory sensitive- children overreact to sensory input and become overwhelmed and hyperactive.💙

Most children may show a combination of both reactions. That’s because their response can change based on their level of arousal or how well they are able to self regulate.

Knowing your child’s triggers can help you find ways to help your child cope and learn tools and strategies for addressing sensory needs.

We are so happy for this video sent to us💙 B’s mom and our team is so proud of him!🌈

Here is why:
-B is maintaining his trunk control while experiencing an external perturbation.
-B is stabilizing with very distal and unstable support.
-B is demonstrating improved core and lower limb endurance in standing.
-B, as he always does, is showing off his incredible focus and determination.

This is the magic of the trampoline, our amazing staff and volunteers, and our clients. The perfect combination!💙🌈

We are so proud of the progress we are seeing at our Rebound Therapy Camp, our newest program!🌈💙

We can already see all the effects that this therapy has on our children:
-Motor development: stimulating the vestibular system helps to keep the brain alert.
-Sense of calm: the rhythmical motion develops a body map and sense of calm.
-Height and depth perception: controlled high and low jumping mounting and dismounting the trampoline.
-Body awareness: the used of proprioceptive, tactile and vestibular input to promote body awareness.

One-to-one Rebound Therapy sessions will continue in September and registrations are open for weekdays and weekends.☑️🌈

Our Dolphin Experience help our children see and understand the marine life🐬 they learn not only about dolphins but about everything around them.
At every visit, we have been lucky to come across many different creatures and our children absolutely love it when they come in contact with them.
Creatures as sea urchins, sand dollars and amazingly big hermit crabs are always part of the experience🐬

Larger creatures as sea turtles and manatees may also be seen at the excursions🐬💙

Horseback Riding Camp🌈💙 at the .ladder.farm includes activities that promote cognitive and Language skills development.

During horseback riding, children’s cognitive concepts naturally improve by engaging with the horse and by learning to follow directions through fun activities on the horse which make task demand easier to grasp, remember and retain.

Children are also naturally motivated to mover and therefore excited and motivated to communicate more while riding. The learner will give the horse direction, which provided them with more opportunities to communicate through both verbal and non-verbal communication such as haptics.

☑️💧Water provides a great source of exercise, working the entire body with cardiovascular and muscular benefits.

☑️💧Water also creates the unique state of buoyancy and body weight reduction allowing for the body to work in ways that it may not be able to on land.

☑️💧Water has a natural way of decreasing stress and relaxing the muscles enabling someone with ASD to experience a greater sense of body awareness and muscle control. This allows an individual to engage and use muscles in a more intentional way.

☑️💧Fun, play-like water exercises and movements can increase core and muscle strength which then helps to improve coordination, balance, and posture. This is extremely beneficial with ASD as there is often limited motor function and range of motion which can all be improved with increased strength and body control.
