Is it normal for the skin to purge after a chemical peel?

Skin purging process is completely normal and safe. It’s a natural process for the skin to emit impurities as quickly as it can. The process doesn’t last long and does not leave any scars.

How long before the skin starts to look better?
Immediately following the peel the skin will be red, irritated, and feel dry. There will be a feeling of tightness which can make the lines and pores appear more noticeable.

Two days post procedure is when the peeling process begins. The skin will feel dry and flaky. It’s important not to pick, scrub or exfoliate the skin and let it heal naturally. It is important to reiterate that the skin purging process is a completely safe, normal, and natural process for your skin to rid itself of impurities as quickly as it can. It shouldn't last very long and should not leave any scars. How Long Does It Take for Skin to Start Looking Better?

Immediately after the peel, your skin won’t be looking great. It’s going to be red, irritated, and even swollen. You might also feel tightness which can make the lines appear deeper and pores enlarged.

Soon, usually 48 hours after the procedure, the peeling process starts. It’s important not to interrupt it. Let your skin heal naturally and don’t pick on the flakes that aren’t ready to shed yet. Your skin will be dry and flaky – so not exactly at its best.

After a couple of days, most of the peeling should be complete. But it may take anywhere from 5-7 days for fresh, new skin to develop. Once your skin is completely healed (within 7-14 days depending on the intensity of the peel) you will be able to see the final results.
