National Day for Truth & Reconciliation is meant to honor and remember the tragic legacy of the residential school systems and the part Canada played in the school’s mandates. An important starting point would be a better understanding of, and appreciation for, the history, heritage, and hardships that Indigenous peoples faced at the hands of Canada’s leaders. As part of this learning process, individuals must reflect on their own personal biases.

Learn, Reflect, and Reconnect. Every Child Matters.

Last year the Federal Government designated September 30th as Truth & Reconciliation Day in Canada. One of the 94 calls to action put forth by the Truth & Reconciliation Commission of Canada was to:

“… establish, a day for Truth & Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process”
– Call to Action #80

We will honour the spirit of this day by taking time to reflect, learn and remember the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities across Canada.

You can visit the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation at: www.nctr.ca to access readings, videos, and various materials for your review.

Former residential school survivors can receive mental health support by calling the 24/7 Residential Schools Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419 or by calling The Hope for Wellness Help line at 1-855-242-3310.

Connecting Care and Points West Living recognize the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Known as the longest serving monarch in British history, the Queen is remembered for the grace and dignity with which she carried out the duties of her office and for her devotion to her subjects.

Her late Majesty visited Alberta numerous times throughout her reign of over 70 years, and is known throughout the world for her efforts in uniting people.

Modern seniors refuse to be tied down by rules and boxed in by mental, physical and social obstacles. They want to not just exist but to flourish. Not to grasp for support, but rather to extend a helping hand. Our seniors want to pass down their collective teachings, history and wisdom through open and honest communication, and in doing so, they want to feel heard and valued. They want a say in their future, and they desire freedom of choice for all the days to come.

A Heartwarming Eden Story...

On May 18th Heritage House in Vegreville held a special supper in support of Ukraine. Posters were distributed around the building prior to the event. We also decorated each dining room table with miniature flags, as well as one large flag for the dining room wall for all to see upon entering.

The perogies were handmade by various different churches and community groups and were delivered by Vegreville Chamber of Commerce. Vegreville is well known for its large Ukrainian population, and even larger Pysanka, also known as a Ukrainian Easter Egg.

Many of our community members as well as a couple of care partners, have been directly affected by the war inUkraine, via extended family members. There are also a couple of care partners with cousins in Ukraine.

Residents were pleased to know that it was Points WestLiving who purchased, thus donating to the efforts to aid those in need during this time of Crisis. Some residents inquired about personal donations, and where those can be made.

Our volunteer garden committee has decided upon the color theme yellow & blue as a small gesture of our solidarity . The food was Duzhe dobre (very good inUkrainian) and enjoyed by All. We here at Points WestLiving Heritage House, proudly stand with Ukraine!
