What is the difference between family counselling and family mediation?
Family counselling helps families improve communication, resolve conflicts, and cope with challenges. Family counselling can involve all or some family members, depending on the situation and therapy goals. Family counselling can help families deal with various issues, such as parenting difficulties, marital or relationship problems, divorce or separation, grief and loss, mental health disorders, substance abuse, domestic violence, and trauma, with a counselling-based approach to provide supportive strategies and recommendations. Family counselling can benefit families who want to strengthen their bonds, learn new skills, and overcome difficulties. Family counselling can also help families prevent problems from escalating or becoming chronic.
Family mediation is a process in which a family mediator helps parties work through and resolve family issues. The mediator assists the parties through a process that focuses on finding a solution that best meets their needs through facilitative conversation to support the family in discussing mutually beneficial outcomes for all. The mediator does not offer recommendations or advice. Instead, the mediator supports difficult discussions, focusing on finding an outcome that everyone feels heard. Meditation can vary in length depending on the challenges brought forward. Beginning with difficult discussions, parties are typically asked to listen and hear each other without judgment or criticism. Mediation is most successful when parties are willing to understand how one another feels, even if your perspective differs; allowing each party to have their feelings is the beginning step to coming together. The family mediator’s role is to help parties communicate with each other better and facilitate the parties to reach an agreement among themselves. Some areas of mediation may include
• Separation and divorce procedures
• Parenting arrangements in separation/divorce
• Conflicts between siblings and their parents
• Step-parenting
• Power imbalance/abuse/neglect
Family mediation can benefit families who want to avoid going to court, save time and money, and maintain privacy and control over their decisions. Family mediation can also help families reduce stress, improve relationships, and prevent future conflicts.
