Registration is open for the spring session of the Young Caregiver Community support groups that begin in April 2024.

The McGill Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Dementia Education Program and the McGill University Research Centre For Studies in Aging have joined forces to offer free, monthly virtual support groups for young caregivers who are looking after a person with young-onset dementia, a diverse condition that affects people under the age of 65.

This community outreach initiative offers a safe, non-judgmental online space for caregivers to share their stories, voice concerns and discuss the joys and challenges of this role with their peers. Our goal is to give a voice to caregivers who face the unique reality of having a parent, a spouse or a sibling with young-onset major neurocognitive disorders.

The upcoming English sessions will be moderated by Miranda Potts and the French sessions will be moderated by Lydia Trudel.

Who is MCSA?

The McGill University Research Centre for Studies in Aging (MCSA) was established in 1985 as a multi-disciplinary academic unit dedicated to gerontological research and postgraduate teaching on the mechanisms of aging as well as prevention of age-associated disorders. Recently the Centre’s mandate was modified to reflect the emergence of novel frontiers in the field of aging research. Most importantly, the MCSA has achieved international recognition for its integrative work on the neurodegeneration of the aging central nervous system and neurodegenerative diseases. The Centre’s scientists are renowned for their contributions in the fields of Alzheimer and Parkinson’s diseases and other cognitive disorders. These diseases are studied through cellular and animal models, epidemiological surveys and case-control studies, human brain banking and clinical drug trials. Long-term objectives include healthy aging for the population at large, delay of appearance of symptoms in genetically predisposed individuals and training of a cadre of basic and clinical scientists in gerontology. The MCSA is part of the McGill University Faculty of Medicine.

The mission of the McGill University Research Centre for Studies in Aging (MCSA) meets the faculty’s objectives for Education, Research, and Service. This includes but is not restricted to offering graduate students the best education available, carrying out excellent scholarly and research activities, and providing services to society in line with our academic strengths. MCSA is meeting the objectives that derive from this mission, by offering graduate students training opportunities through participation in research programs using cutting-edge research methodologies (e.g., neuroimaging, pharmacology, cognitive and behavioral testing), allowing them early exposure to leaders in the field through student participation in international conferences. Training is possible and complemented by superior research performance of the Centre, evidenced by high productivity of our core members, numerous high impact publications, both directly at the Centre and through our affiliated and associate members of MCSA.
