Help! One of our Mountain Midwifery families just lost everything in a devastating house fire. Luckily mom, dad and baby (born in April) just made it out in time, but lost everything, except for their important documents. Imagine grabbing your baby and running out- that's all they have. And they thank god for it every day!

They're living in a motel until August 1st, so most of this stuff needs to be stored somewhere until then (so we're also looking for a location to store these things)

We are hoping you can help and donate:

- baby clothes 3-6 months
- swaddle blankets
- crib
- stroller
- baby bath tub
- baby swing
- pack 'n play
- car seat
- gift cards (they didn't ask for this, but for those that don't have donations and want to help, money or gift cards would be so helpful. They're currently buying groceries at Freshco as they live in a motel close by at the moment)

Dad lost his phone in the fire, their car also got destroyed.
If you have an old but workable phone and want to donate it, please let us know!

Please reach out to us by pm and we will start a WhatsApp group to help coordinate donations etc. Let's show this family what a strong community we are!

For the first time in over 60 years, a baby was born on Kehewin Cree Nation last month thanks to a midwifery program that is the first of its kind in a First Nation in Alberta.

In the early hours of April 5, Maelan Simaganis-Tsatoke started to feel contractions, but she was in Edmonton, far from her home in Kehewin, 240 kilometres east of the city.

She decided to drive nearly three hours back to the First Nation.

"I just knew that I wanted our family there, community," said Simaganis-Tsatoke, who is originally from Poundmaker First Nation in Saskatchewan.

"It was like a dream, honestly, to have that experience."

By the time Simaganis-Tsatoke arrived, a makeshift birthing centre had been set up in a space that was formerly a daycare.

What made this birth different is that it was a traditional birth, incorporating Cree songs, smudging, and a fire burning outside. Kokums — or grandmothers — played a key role.

"Every contraction I had somebody holding me and when they got stronger, my cousin Jada was singing to me," said Simaganis-Tsatoke.

"It just helped ground me and it was just a really beautiful experience. And to have the kokums smudging me, praying for me, I just loved it. It was so beautiful."

The Mountain Midwifery team presented to grade 7 and grade 8 students at Charles Bloom Secondary school about what it is like to work as a midwife. We had some very engaged students, some were born at home with midwives, others knew they were born by c/s, some didn’t know anything about their births. (We suspect a lot of moms had to talk about their birth last night!) It was lovely to be in a room with so many other amazing health professionals, we later had lunch together. This was definitely something we would do again 🤩 Thanks for having us, Thank you for the MABC for supporting us with material and swag, the measuring tapes, pens and lights were a huge hit! Thanks to Graham at for having fun with our belly cast!
