Jo-Ann Sullivan - Certified Pilates Instructor

After many years as a competitive swimmer and coach, Jo-Ann focused her attention on becoming an A.C.E. She is a registered member of The Canadian Association of Fitness Professionals, The Pilates Method Alliance, a seminar presenter and a BCRPA Trainer of Fitness Leaders. She was also a founding member of The Canadian Pilates Association and held a position on their Board Of Directors till 2006. During this time she also pursued a certificate in Thai Massage and became a Registered Natural Health Practitioner. Her Pilates education includes an intensive eight month apprenticeship-training program following The Polestar Education Pilates curriculum in Reformer, Wall Unit, High-Low Chair and Mat as well as completion of the widely recognized Stott Pilates Conditioning Program (Level 2). She has also recently graduated from the Master’s Program offered by the world renowned Pilates Center in Boulder Colorado – considered by many to offer the most rigorous, comprehensive and respected training programs in the world. She continues to expand her knowledge of anatomy and movement by incorporating other modalities of body work. She has been involved in the Pilates community in BC since 1998 after a car accident left her with injuries that were not healing from traditional methods of rehabilitation. It was at that time she realized the powerful connection between mind and body to heal itself. Her first experience with teaching this method was at Delta Orthopedic and Physiotherapy under the guidance of Diane Lee and Karen Angelucci . She then went on to teach at The Canadian Pilates Institute. This experience along with modern scientific gains and insight into how the body moves helped her realize that Pilates is an ever growing and evolving system with a deep respect for its traditional roots. It is from this perspective that Jo-Ann’s goal is to inspire others to work towards the same profound changes she herself experienced through the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning.

Pilates isn’t about memorising exercises, it’s about feeling them.

You don’t need a degree to know when your body feels aligned, supported and alive.

Whether you’re deepening your own practice or guiding others through theirs, Pilates teaches us to listen, not just to muscles but to movement. When we slow down enough to hear, that’s when movement starts to speak.

This idea is at the heart of the Pilates method: mind, body & spirit. And it’s what I remind myself often when in my own practice.

For Pilates teachers and lifelong learners alike, this is your reminder to move with presence, not performance. Precision, but with a purpose. And 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧!

🧬 Connective tissue disorders are complex genetic conditions that affect the make-up of connective tissue. Connective tissue is important for providing strength and flexibility to structures throughout the body.

❤️‍🩹 Conditions in these tissues can lead to symptoms in the blood vessels, eyes, bones, heart, skin, joints, and more.

Vascular connective tissue disorders include Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Marfan syndrome, and Loeys-Dietz syndrome and are generally passed down on the mother’s side.

After my brother’s aorta dissected while at altitude on a skiing trip, he was diagnosed with a connective tissue disorder so I underwent genetic testing too.

I was diagnosed with Loeys-Dietz syndrome and underwent aortic repair surgery in 2009. 💪❤️

🤸🏽 Pilates has been the glue that has held me together and i cannot recommend it highly enough to you, your friends, and clients who might have it.

While the full spectrum of LDS is not yet fully understood, some of the symptoms in your clients might include:

• Herniations
• Eye abnormalities
• Translucent skin
• Easy bruising
• Hyper-mobility
• Abnormally long limbs*
• Curved spine*
• Flat feet*

👀 Look at my photo again and you’ll see these 3 symptoms more clearly. And though i have all these symptoms and more, I swear by Pilates for my continued well-being.
