📢 Disability Pride Month
🇨🇦 Accessible Canada Act
🗓️ July 2025

As we approach the end of Disability Pride Month, we want to share information related to Accessible Canada Act and how this vitally important federal legislation can help shape a truly inclusive Canadian society every day! Watch for us this week as we share everything you ever wanted to know about this important Act!

We know that more than 8 million Canadians aged 15 years and over have a disability — that’s roughly 22% of the our country’s population. For these millions of individuals, participating in society can often be challenging. Whether it’s limitations in physical environments or online accessibility barriers, participating in everyday society can be difficult for Canadians with disabilities.

🇨🇦 What is the Accessible Canada Act?
The Accessible Canada Act (ACA) was created to break down existing barriers, enabling Canadians with disabilities full and equal access to both physical and online spaces. The ACA was adopted by the federal government in 2019 and aims to identify, remove, and prevent barriers facing people with disabilities. The Act’s goal is to create a Canada without barriers by 2040.

An Accessibility Commissioner is responsible for enforcing the Act and the Accessible Canada Regulations. This Act takes a new approach to accessibility by requiring organizations to proactively find, remove, and prevent barriers, rather than waiting for people with disabilities to request their removal.

The Act applies to the federal government and organizations regulated by it, including government departments and private businesses operating in specific sectors such as banking, airlines, and phone companies.

Organizations must adhere to the following requirements:
1️⃣ Consult people with disabilities
2️⃣ Publish accessibility plans outlining their efforts to find, remove, and prevent barriers
3️⃣ Establish mechanisms to receive and respond to feedback on accessibility
4️⃣Publish progress reports demonstrating their adherence to accessibility plans
5️⃣Notify the Accessibility Commissioner when they publish their plans, feedback processes, and progress reports.

📢 Mois de la fierté des personnes handicapées
🇨🇦 Loi canadienne sur l'accessibilité
🗓️ Juillet 2025

Today we honor the power, resilience, activism, and ongoing fight for justice for those who have lived experiences of disability. During this day, in 1990 was the signing of the American's with Disabilities Act, a historic moment that has been achieved through decades of advocacy, civil disobedience, and a community who fought together with collective power.
Disability is not a limitation - barriers are. Independence means equity, access, and the freedom to live unapologetically and as freely and as fully as we want to be.
Today we recognize struggle, celebrate power, and strive to keep pushing forward.
