It’s been 9 months Mama,
And finally we are now here.
Together, skin to skin,
The comfort of your heart beat still so near.

It’s been a long road Mama,
You’ve done so much for me.
Sacrificing your body, your sleep, your everything,
All to grow me safely in your belly.

It’s not the end though Mama,
We’re only just at the start.
I still need every part of you,
In the light of days and nights of dark.

It’s all so big out here Mama,
And I’m not sure of anything yet.
I love that you’re still close to me,
You’re my personalised safety net.

It’s relentless what you’re doing Mama,
I’m small and I need so much.
But mostly I need your love and safety,
You breath, your skin, your touch.

It’s a lot for me right now Mama,
The outside world is all so new.
The smells, the faces, the sounds,
But my favourite thing of all is you.

It’s a new reflection, I know Mama,
To you but not to me.
Remember I didn’t know you of before,
But you of now is as perfect as can be.

It’s not easy sometimes Mama,
I know it can be hard on you.
The feeding, the healing, the rawness,
The sheer overwhelm of all the new.

It’s ok if you cry too Mama,
The tears are not just mine.
There’s a lot going on for us both, at once,
It’s ok to shed them at the same time.

It will all go too quickly though Mama,
I won’t always be this small.
I’ll need you less day by day,
And time, while slow, won’t actually stall.

It’s you that got me here Mama,
Don’t forget how capable you are.
You may feel weak and unsteady right now,
But truly Mama, you’ve come so far.

It’s one day at a time ok Mama?
Let’s figure it out together.
We’ve been a team for months already,
We both know we can handle whatever.

It’s such a special time now Mama,
This second chapter in the story of us.
And nothing feels more right to me,
Than giving you my life, for now, in trust.

For families planning/considering homebirth in the coming weeks/months. EMS is grossly understaffed and ambulance delays are occurring frequently. As a registered midwife I rely on
EMS for safe and efficient transport in case of an emergency at home. If this is not available, birthing at home will carry significantly more risk and may unfortunately become a service that will be temporarily suspended by Blue Skye Midwifery until such a time that safe staffing is again available. -Laura

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

BC’s ambulance service is experiencing a critical staff shortage - patients are suffering, paramedics are burning out, and if the situation is not addressed immediately, APBC President Troy Clifford warns, "the ambulance service may not survive."

On October 3rd, 2022, The Ambulance Paramedics and Emergency Dispatchers of BC/CUPE Local 873 will officially sit down at the bargaining table to work on a new collective agreement, aimed at fixing the ailing system.

“We are in the middle of an unprecedented staffing crisis, ambulances are sitting empty across the province, and we are seeing the effects of understaffing and poor wages now more than ever” says Clifford. “We are bringing real solutions to the bargaining table and what we believe can fix the ambulance service and set us on a path forward where we can finally recruit and retain staff.”

The Ambulance Paramedics of BC cover almost one million square kilometres of land across BC, with stations sprinkled across all of BC and thousands of paramedics and dispatchers trying to keep ambulances staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Deployment models vary, but many small communities only pay paramedics $2 an hour to be “on-call” and carry a pager, waiting for a call to come in.

“The work environment is stressful and emotional even at the best of times, but with all these ambulances sitting empty, our response times have turned from minutes to hours- it’s heartbreaking. We are seeing our people burn out like never before, with over 30% of our members either off work with mental health challenges or still coming to work while getting treatment for it”, says the APBC President.

BC Emergency Health Services has embarked on a major hiring campaign, but they ran out of trained paramedic recruits long ago and are now hiring underqualified people without paramedic training. “Our members are leaving this job in big numbers. People are retiring early. They are leaving our field for other public safety jobs in policing or the fire department and health.".”

APBC President Clifford says, “We want a fair agreement that finally addresses the issues with attracting trained paramedics and paying people properly no matter what area of BC they work in. We are currently paid 30% less than police officers and our partners in the fire department and even less than our colleagues in healthcare.”

Negotiations are scheduled to start on October 3rd and continue into the fall.
