I spent over 10 years "resting" an old Achilles injury, hoping it would heal on its own. It didn’t. When I trained for an Ironman after retiring from swimming, that same injury flared up, and it took over two years of focused rehab before I could run pain-free again.

Deadlifts are a powerhouse movement. Here's how to get the most out of them:

Step 1 . Set your feet about hip-width apart (with shoelaces under the bar) and root them into the floor by twisting slightly outward. Meet your shins to the bar, position your shoulders over the bar and create tension.

Step 2. Drive through your legs, keeping the bar close to your body. It should lightly graze your shins as it rises.

Step 3. Once the bar passes your knees, drive your hips forward to stand tall. Pause briefly at the top, then return the weight to the floor with control.
