Gluten—the group of proteins found in wheat, some oats, rye, barley, spelt, and kamut—is a major cause of digestive issues for many people. Today’s diets are often too high in gluten. In fact, many of the grains we eat are hybridized and can contain up to 700% more gluten than the original varieties.
Common symptoms linked to gluten sensitivity include:
* Headaches
* Skin rashes (often mistaken for psoriasis)
* Lower back ache (see my article “Have you had enough of your back pain?”)
* Ear, nose, throat, and sinus infections
* Chronic bronchitis
* Brain fog (yes, that’s the actual term!)
If you suspect gluten is causing problems, try removing it from your diet for 4 weeks. This must be a complete abstinence—no exceptions. Another option is a simple blood test to check for gluten allergies.
Be prepared to read labels carefully, as gluten often hides in unexpected places. For example, cinnamon is sometimes mixed with gluten as a cheap filler.
I’ve seen amazing results when clients remove gluten from their diets: hip, neck, and back pain ease; chronic coughs stop; shoulder tension releases; and even irritability in children improves.
