The Neurodiversity Family Centre

The Neurodiversity Family Centre An inclusive centre providing Neurodiversity affirming counselling to children, teens, couples & adults.

Although each practitioner uses their own unique set of skills and therapy styles, as a centre, we believe in collaborative problem solving approach by Dr. Ross Greene and the family connections approach by Dr. Allison Reese. Our center offers support for children, youth and families in order to provide education, build connections, and foster success. We offer services for Neurodivergent youth as well as their siblings, parents and educators. Currently our services focus on youth with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. However, we are working towards offering services for twice exceptional youth, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and more.

🌈 Communicating with your Neurodivergent Child 🌈
Sometimes, even the kindest requests like “Please put your shoes on” can sound like a demand to the neurodivergent mind. What feels like a simple ask may feel overwhelming or triggering to them, especially when dopamine levels are low.
That’s where Low Demand Communication comes in. By shifting from giving directions to using declarative language—describing, noticing, or sharing information—we can invite cooperation without pressure.

✨ For example:
Instead of “Please put your shoes on,” try “I noticed your shoes are still by the door.”

This approach helps:
💜 Reduce stress and power struggles
💜 Prime your child to make their own healthy choices
💜 Support autonomy and independence
💜 Foster connection instead of resistance

Every child deserves to feel safe and respected. By adjusting our language, we give them the chance to make their own decisions, instead of forcing compliance.

🌟 The best part? They can take all the credit for making healthy choices! This is the perfect time to congratulate your kiddo on managing their morning routine, or whatever the task at hand is!

✨Preparing Your Child for Back-to-School✨

The transition back to school can be especially tough for neurodivergent kids, but small steps now can ease anxiety and build confidence 💜

Swipe through for 4 gentle strategies you can start today 👇

🛏 Sleep Schedules
Begin shifting bedtime/wake-up times 1–2 weeks before school starts. Use visual timers, calming audio, and sensory tools like weighted blankets to support sleep transitions.

📋 Morning Routines
Use checklists or visuals to support executive functioning. Let your child co-create their routine and identify where they need help vs. what they can do independently. Implement these routines 1-2 weeks prior to the start of school so your kiddo is an expert by the time school starts.

🌙 Evening Routines
Work with your child to structure your nights with calming, predictable steps like reading, hygiene, or prepping clothes/bags for the next day. Allow them to choose what they would like to do in order to wind down, engage in self-care, and prepare for the next day.

💬 Talk About It
Open the door to emotions. Try saying “I wonder if you’re feeling…” to help your child explore any back-to-school nerves or excitement without pressure. Explore together any possible solutions to problems that may potentially arise.

You’ve got this 💪 And if you’re looking for more support, we’re here for you.

🌟 What if your child’s challenges could be supported by their strengths? 🌟

Strengths-based parenting is a powerful way to help your neurodivergent child thrive — not by “fixing” them, but by recognizing what makes them shine ✨

💬 Instead of focusing on what your child can’t do, this approach nurtures their natural talents, interests, and abilities to help them navigate difficulties with confidence.

🧠 Whether it’s creativity, hyperfocus, empathy, or problem-solving — every child has strengths worth celebrating.

👪 In our latest blog post, we explore:
