VTRA is a registered charity and non-profit organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding and related equine-assisted activities for those with diverse abilities. VTRA has been operating since 1982, when it was started by a small and extremely dedicated group of visionaries who wanted to bring the proven benefits of equine assisted activities to our community. Finding a permanent home was a challenge for the program in the early years; in 2009 VTRA was fortunate to be able to set up long term operations its’ current location. Its history demonstrates growth from a small, volunteer-only organization to a well-structured not-for-profit agency with an employed staff, consisting of highly trained and experienced therapeutic riding professionals. There is a large pool of committed volunteers who provide most of our program services, working as horse handlers, sidewalkers, assistant instructors, grooms, and helpers in the clubhouse. The scope of our activities and the degree of organization have increased over the years, resulting in a substantial enhancement of levels of service and efficacy of our programs.

🎉🐴 Happy Birthday, Joey! 🐴🎉

Today we’re celebrating the incredible Joey, who turns 27 years old this year!

This Arabian x Morgan mare joined VTRA back in 2011, after a career as a competitive endurance trail riding horse—and she’s still going strong! Joey brings her sharp mind, big heart, and decades of experience into every lesson.

Known around the barn as the smartest horse in the herd, Joey always seems one step ahead of us. Whether she’s teaching volunteers the ropes or keeping things running smoothly in the arena, she’s our quiet genius.

🎉🐴 Happy 25th Birthday, KC! 🐴🎉

Today we’re celebrating one of the most respected members of our herd—KC, our lead mare and true queen of the paddock! 👑

Born in 2000, this beautiful American Quarter Horse has been part of the VTRA family since 2019. Her full, regal name? Kings Charge Flame—and yes, she lives up to it!

At 25 years old, KC continues to lead with quiet confidence, keeping order in the herd while still patiently supporting our participants in lessons. She’s steady, wise, and always watching—making sure everything (and everyone) is in line.

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that VTRA has received a generous grant from the Victoria Foundation to support our core operating funds!

This vital funding will help sustain and strengthen our Equine-Assisted Services, which aids individuals with diverse abilities in personal growth.

With this support, we can continue to:

- Maintain the health and well-being of our incredible therapeutic horses

🐴💛 A special visit from Sunrise Senior Living 🐴💛

On June 26th, we had the privilege of welcoming Sunrise Senior Living to our facility for a very special visit with our beloved horses. We guided them through a private tour of our facility, sharing our mission and the meaningful work we do every day. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, exchange stories, and showcase how our programs enrich lives.

The day was filled with laughter, heartfelt stories, and hands-on grooming as residents shared cherished memories of their past experiences with horses. It was incredibly moving to hear their reflections and see the joy on their faces.

We also enjoyed a delightful surprise: among our guests was Belle, the very first Volunteer Coordinator of VTRA—photographed here with our Executive Director, Liz Gagel. Hearing Belle's stories from her time with VTRA was both inspiring and nostalgic, and we were honored to celebrate her legacy with us.
