A recently surfaced government briefing note shows the province’s own logging agency has approved opening high-risk endangered old growth recommended for logging deferrals to clearcutting. As renowned forest scientist, Rachel Holt warns: “Across the landscape of B.C., we are systematically losing that forest type … and many, many species are suffering as a result.”

Old-growth forests are irreplaceable, providing habitat, storing carbon, sustaining watersheds and Indigenous relationships to the land. Sierra Club BC will continue pushing for permanent legal protections for old-growth and expose government back-tracking on commitments. Part of the solution includes making funding available to help First Nations and resource-dependent communities transition off the logging of endangered old growth.

There’s a big secret in B.C.’s forests: we don’t actually know how much old growth is left, what’s being logged, or what’s protected. So we filled the gap.

We commissioned two leading forest scientists to analyze B.C.’s own data — and the results were alarming:

1️⃣ Logging is targeting the last big-treed old growth.
2️⃣ Old-growth areas recommended for deferral are actually 4x more likely to be logged.
3️⃣ Less than 6% of at-risk old growth is protected.

Logging what little remains would be devastating for communities, climate and biodiversity.

As B.C. works toward protecting 30% of lands and waters by 2030, we know municipalities are essential to making that goal a reality. From urban forests and wetlands to watersheds and greenbelts, local protected areas strengthen ecological resilience. As our Associate Campaigns Director Shelley Luce notes: “All of the services that we depend on, all the processes that occur in the natural world around us really need at least 30 per cent of the planet in order to function properly in a way that supports all of us people.”

In this latest article, Shelley talked with CBC about what’s needed to reach our 30x30 goals and the findings of our “Closer to the Brink” forest report.

The new federal–Alberta pipeline MOU pushes Canada toward another risky coastal oil project, threatening B.C.’s coast with an oil spill and undermining climate progress. We’ve been clear in our response: “The people who will ultimately pay the price of this will be those who are dependent on clean ocean waters, not only for food security, but for a thriving fishing and tourism economy.”

The fight isn’t over. We stand with Coastal First Nations, the B.C. government and communities across the province who have been vocal in their opposition to this proposed project. Together, we can protect the coast and economy.

The independent review of CleanBC (aka the province’s climate action plan) confirms what we and many communities and First Nations have warned for years: expanding LNG is incompatible with real climate action.

As our Senior Policy and Science Advisor, Jens Wieting, points out in the article: “We have a government that has acted with one hand to reduce emissions from buildings, from transportation, from other industries, and then acts with the other hand to increase emissions by allowing a massive expansion of LNG production and fracking.”

We’re calling on the province to strengthen CleanBC by investing in clean electricity, energy-efficient buildings, and solutions that genuinely move us beyond fossil fuels. Together, we can secure a climate-safe future for everyone in B.C.

Want to hear some niche drama? Two forest scientists dropped a major new report on the state of the woods in British Columbia using the government's own data. The findings are shocking.

Every day, 100 soccer fields of the last old growth in B.C. is clearcut. Let’s change that.

We can support the economy AND the environment by transitioning to sustainable second-growth forestry while protecting the last ancient forests. Join the thousands of people speaking up for forests and send a message today: https://sierraclub.bc.ca/send-a-letter-for-old-growth-forests/

The Ottawa-Alberta pipeline agreement signed this morning should be seen for what it really is — an attempt to spin a narrative for a pipeline with no route, no proponent and no support from Coastal First Nations.

It is a non-binding memorandum of understanding, with zero consultation with First Nations or the government of B.C., and carries no weight in the discussion of Canada’s energy future.

Thousands of British Columbians have spoken up in support of the Oil Tanker Moratorium on B.C.’s north coast and in opposition to a new pipeline across the province. The Coastal First Nations coalition has issued a strong joint statement reiterating that they will never allow oil tankers in the waters that they rely on for jobs, food security and a thriving tourism and fisheries economy.

Good news for our coast and economy!

The tanker ban that keeps the coast of British Columbia oil-spill free and supports thousands of jobs is safe for now.

There are two big wins to celebrate: (1) Coastal First Nations and the B.C. government have signed a public declaration to keep the north coast tanker ban in place. (2) The proposed northern pipeline (that would require demolishing B.C.'s tanker ban) is not on the list of Canada’s major projects being fast-tracked.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has spoken up on this issue! These wins are happening because of the leadership of Coastal First Nations and the massive outcry from thousands of people like you across the province.

The fight isn't over yet. Despite our clear "NO", Alberta's Premier is still trying to dismantle B.C.'s tanker ban.

So, to keep the momentum going, we're hosting a webinar that busts the business case for a northern pipeline.

A new forest report just dropped, and it’s a real doozy. We partnered with two of the leading forest researchers in Canada to examine the state of the woods in British Columbia.

Spoiler alert: these latest findings show that B.C. has not made significant progress on its forest commitments. The province promised to work alongside First Nations to steward the last old-growth forests and transition to sustainable second-growth forestry. This transition is needed to bolster our economy and environment.

Protecting our coast protects our economy!

The federal oil tanker ban protects marine ecosystems and thousands of local jobs and businesses. Now this legislation finds itself front and centre with Alberta's push for a new oil pipeline to B.C.’s north coast, which would require demolishing the tanker ban.

Join us for a free webinar where we will challenge the business case of a north coast pipeline.

Our panelists include:
• Andy Hira, political science professor at SFU
• Doug Neasloss, stewardship director Kitasoo/Xaixais Nation
• Grace Nosek, legal scholar focusing on climate misinformation
