Moving from emotional bypassing to emotional processing starts with giving yourself permission to feel everything, even the uncomfortable stuff! Instead of brushing emotions aside, try sitting with them gently and asking what they’re trying to tell you.

Positive self-esteem is the foundation of learning and thriving! Appreciation for another’s light helps them grow into their best and brightest self 🌟

When children come to the age of consciously forming their identities, they are more impressionable to external messaging that can negatively affect self-esteem. It is in these years we must especially foster in them a strong connection to their inner light!

Parents can help undo a child’s emotionally-based unhealthy narrative. First, bring it to awareness by gently naming the emotions and narrative, then offer a more accurate and healthier one to reframe their self-conception.

In the process, validate the child’s emotions and genuinely own up to your own mistakes if they have contributed to the unhealthy narrative. Share how you would like to do better in a meaningful way. It also helps to compliment the child on their strengths to boost their self-esteem.

This approach connects to multiple of the principles of our MindKey Compass, which guides our work:

#1: Start Early
#2: Give unconditional Love
#3: Stay Current
#5: Nurture Relationships
#7: Build resilience

Reframing narratives takes time, but has lasting effects on a child’s foundational growth and is well worth the effort.

Thank you Psychology Today for these wonderful insights. Please read this article for further information on how to get the reframe conversations just right:

The recipe for undoing an unhealthy narrative isn’t what you might guess, but it’s not hard. Here are specific strategies to help kids form lasting, healthy narratives.

Kindness and positive reinforcement can significantly boost a highly sensitive child’s self-esteem 💞

Praise, thoughtful gestures, gradual exposure to social situations, and gently encouraging them to ask for help when they need it can make them feel supported, confident, and capable of managing challenges 😊

Our Story

Life has always been challenging. Relationships, parenting, work/life balance. But now we’re also dealing with complex issues created by technology and climate change. When you look at the big picture, and how drastically life has changed in such a short time, it’s not surprising that we’re experiencing an unprecedented mental health crisis.

In Canada, 1 in 5 people have a mental illness, su***de is the second leading cause of death for children and teens, and each week 500,000 employees miss work due to mental illness. Something needs to change right now. That's where we come in.

FamilySparks is a for-profit, social impact company. We're disrupting the mental health space by providing clinically-based solutions that meaningfully change lives. Our core program is our social impact-focused Employee Assistance Program - EAP+. This program enables employers to provide high quality mental health care for their employees and families, with 75% of users saying their mental health is better because of our program. In addition to EAP+, we offer a slate of specialized mental health services, including Crisis Management, Mental Wellness First Aid, Resilience Training and more. At the core of FamilySparks is CEO & Founder Dr. Jillian Roberts, a child psychologist, a professor and a mother of 3. She is the author of two best-selling and award-winning series of children’s books that explain tough topics to kids: “Just Enough” for children ages 3-6 and “The World Around Us” for ages 5-8. She is also the author of “Kids, S*x & Screens: Raising Strong, Resilient Children in the S*xualized Digital Age” for the parents of preteens.
