Do you have a red eye? Please don't go to your pharmacist or GP (if you're lucky enough to have one). A slitlamp is required to properly diagnose a red eye, which a pharmacist or GP does not have. It could be as simple as a dry eye, or it could be as dangerous as a corneal ulcer or iritis. We do our best to fit in emergencies within 24 hours, during our work week.

It's plum season! I love Italian plums--in cakes, compotes, jams, or just on their own. Plums are a good source of vitamin A, which is important for eyesight. They're also high in vitamin C (an antioxidant, which is also important for eye health) and fibre. Get 'em while they're ripe!

A back to school reminder from the Canadian Association of Optometrists: Children with vision problems are generally unaware of their condition, because they assume everyone sees the way they do. It’s important to be on the watch for signs that suggest your child may be struggling to see. And, of course, to book them in for their annual eye exam! (Fully MSP-covered at our clinic.)

Symphony splash is back this year! It doesn't get much better than the Victoria Harbour, live symphony and fireworks (on August 3). Enjoy our beautiful city this summer!

Symphony SPLASH! returns to Victoria’s Inner Harbour this summer! The iconic event on the water now spans two full days over the B.C. Day long weekend, offering more music, more community, and more celebration than ever before.

It's so beautiful this time of year! Are you stuck indoors, on a computer? Make sure you take 15 min outdoor breaks right after intense near work. Being outside delivers an eye focusing "stop" signal, and helps the eyes relax. Looking in the distance when outside causes us to look far away with our peripheral vision too, which relaxes the visual system (as opposed to just looking out the window at work). And generally, being outdoors stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, causing us to relax. So use your 15 minute breaks to step outside so your eyes, and you, feel better.

While most Canadians recognize the importance of sunscreen to prevent sunburns and skin cancer, many are unaware that UV light from the sun can cause serious eye damage. In fact, overexposure to UV rays has been linked to a number of eye diseases that can lead to vision loss. So wear your 100% UV-blocking sunglasses!

Note: cataracts can be hastened by a lot of UV exposure, but everyone eventually gets them.

The "Mediterranean" diet is generally considered to be a healthy life-long diet, promoting a healthy heart and blood vessels, lower risk of diabetes, and lower risk of certain cancers. Earlier in the spring, I learned at a conference that there are studies showing that the Mediterranean diet is specifically good for Sjogren's disease, which involves extremely dry eyes.

It's a tried and true way to eat. Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables, shrink the unhealthy carbs, replace fats (like butter) with oils, cut back on salt, and limit added sugar. That’ll get you most of the way there. Good for your eyes, and the rest of your body.

Yay! School's out! Time to play outside! Being outside is good for the eyes, and can help prevent nearsightedness in kids.

A reminder of the screen time recommendations for kids: NONE for 0-2 years old. 1 hour/day from 2-5, 2 hours from 5-18 years old. So many good reasons to go outside!
