Going skiing over Christmas? Or just waiting for the rain to end? Don't forget your UV protection this winter! Despite the dropping temperature and increased cloud cover, it’s important to always protect your eyes against UVA and UVB rays. Your eyes are sensitive to these rays all year round, and we don’t often consider the reflections of the sun off the snow. Overexposure to UV rays (all year round!), has been linked to a multitude of problems, including cataracts, degeneration of the retina, and damage to the cornea. Be sure to select quality specs that have 100 per cent UVA/UVB stickers.

Do you work on a computer? Taking a 15 minute outdoor break right after intense near work makes a big difference in relaxing the visual system. Being outside delivers an eye focusing "stop" signal, and helps the eyes relax. Looking in the distance when outside causes us to look far away with our peripheral vision too, which relaxes the visual system (as opposed to just looking out the window at work). Also, being outdoors is said to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, causing our bodies to relax.

Ideally, you should take a 5 minute outdoor break every half hour, but you may not have easy access to the outdoors, and in the winter sometimes the weather's not conducive. But do your best to use your 15 minute breaks to step outside and walk around the block so your eyes, and you, feel better.

So simple and it's a great visual: half your plate veggies, with whole grain foods, and healthy proteins. This diet keeps your eyes healthy too!

November is diabetes awareness month, and uncontrolled diabetes can cause significant damage to your eyes. So avoid (or improve your diabetes) by 1- avoiding processed foods, and 2- eating lots of veggies!

"Don't take a pill, take a photon." -Dr. Samer Hattar (a chronobiologist). Love that quote. The quote is in the context of mood and mental health and sleep-wake cycle, but there are so many reasons to spend time outside! One of them is to get your vitamin D, of which we're learning more and more about the importance. There is growing evidence of a lack of vitamin D increasing the risk of dry eyes (among other other eye diseases). So step outside at lunch and get a photon!

Our previous OCT died, so we have a new OCT! The main function of an OCT is to take a light "ultrasound" image of your retinal layers. It gives us amazing information to help diagnose and treat glaucoma and macular degeneration (among other diseases). And now those images are in even higher resolution!

A reminder for the new school year...
Here's an article from the Canadian Pediatric Society on the effects of screen time on children: developmental, physical and psychosocial. Screen use as children can affect them for the rest of their lives! If you would like resources on how to regulate screen time in your household, I highly recommend 's informative and very practical book, The Tech Diet.

There's more evidence emerging that screen use contributes to near-sightedness (myopia)... more on that another time.
