Back from Europe with more amazing tools to help you heal and feel better!
Hi everyone!
My trip to Europe was delightful, enlightening, and professionally rewarding.
The Neurokinetic Therapy (Level 3) course I attended in Slovakia covered many interesting topics. Of particular interest was a protocol that can be applied to the Hyoid Bone, Eye Muscles, Ligaments, Scars, and Pelvic Floor.
Today, I invite you to dive into the topic of The Hyoid Bone. Enjoy!!!

The Hyoid Bone
The hyoid bone is peculiar.
It is located superior to the thyroid cartilage, just above what is commonly referred as "Adam's apple" (pictures from Fine Art America). At birth, this bone is actually three different bones that eventually end up (for most of us) joining and fusing to form a single structure that looks like a horseshoe or a thin croissant. But this is not what makes it so special.
The rule says that bones connect to other bones. But to every rule there is an exception and the exception is the hyoid bone.
The hyoid bone has no direct attachments to any other bone. This is why it is often referred to as "the floating bone". Despite what its label suggests, the hyoid bone does not float, wobble or move freely in our throat. It is anchored by muscles connecting it to the skull, tongue, larynx (voice box), jaw, sternum, and shoulder blade.
Due to its location and connections, it plays a vital role in speech, swallowing, breathing, and proprioception (our ability to sense where our body is positioned in space).

Neuromuscular Treatment for Hyoid Bone Misalignment
Hyoid bone misalignment may manifest in the form of global dysfunction. A horse with a misaligned hyoid apparatus will exhibit a slightly crooked gait. In a similar way, humans with a slightly rotated hyoid bone will have the impression of standing straight and yet, their trunk, pelvis or legs will be slightly turned to one side.
A misaligned hyoid bone may also be at the origin of, or contribute to, local conditions such as:
• Obstructive sleep apnea
• Change in or loss of voice
• Restricted range of motion
• Constant need to clear the throat
• Feeling of tension, tenderness or sensation of foreign object in the throat
Fortunately, it is possible to improve and correct hyoid bone misalignment caused by uneven muscle pull. Neuromuscular treatments for hyoid misalignment are gentle and yet, very effective.
In addition to the conditions listed above, a Neuromuscular Hyoid bone assessment is recommended when there is a history of:
• Trauma to the throat
• Concussion or whiplash
• Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia)
• Intubation (artificial ventilation)
• Surgery or lesions to the tongue
