New Publication!

The findings from this study indicate that the occurrence of postpartum unwanted intrusive thoughts (UITs) of infant-related harm is normative and typically self-revolving. Almost all participants reported thoughts of accidentally harming their infant and over half reported throughs of intentionally harming their infant. The most intense period for UITs was within the first 8 weeks postpartum, during which moderate to severe distress related to those thoughts was common. For most people, UITs fully resolved or decreased in frequency by 6 months postpartum. Increased education is needed to normalize and reduce distress associated with UITs.

New Publication!

The findings from this study indicate that interest in stress management training programmes (SMT), such as counselling and self-guided study, is common during pregnancy. In this sample, emotional distress rather than objective medical risk was a better indicator of interest in SMT, supporting the need for universal perinatal anxiety screening. Care providers should inquire early-on about interest in SMT during pregnancy and ensure awareness of SMT options.

Thank you to all the organizations, scientists, and perinatal people who have supported us in our mission to promote the mental health of pregnant and postpartum people and their babies🤍 We are now collecting donations to support current and future research initiatives on perinatal anxiety and related disorders (AD). Although ADs are the most common mental health conditions affecting the perinatal population (20%), we are the only research lab in Canada focusing on perinatal anxiety. Your donation today will help us sustain current research projects as well as develop new initiatives such as identifying perinatal anxiety screening tools, improving postpartum harm thoughts management, and supporting knowledge translation activities. The UBC Perinatal Anxiety Research Lab

The PAR Lab is dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of new and expectant mothers, and their babies. Pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period are times of significant change and challenge, that can have a significant impact on maternal mental health. We look to investigate how mental health issues can

  • develop and/or be exacerbated during the perinatal period;

  • affect the physical health of women; and

  • ultimately, affect the physical health of their babies.
