❗ATTENTION ESQUIMALT ❗
I post this with severe reluctance in drawing attention to myself and my business, as I am aware of the hugely negative impact that my opinion can and will have on a considerable percentage of people who are in opposition to my opinion. To say this in a public space causes me a lot of fear as a business owner and as a resident of Esquimalt, because public spaces can be more mean and disrespectful than any individual you or I would encounter on any normal day of my life. In saying that, I am asking for you, the public, to please be considerate with your responses to this post, and remember that I am a real human who works hard every day to take care of others, most of whom are members in this community too. I have chosen to leave commenting open on my post, despite my reluctance, due to this public issue.
THE ISSUE:
We are losing parking along Esquimalt Road in exchange for bike lanes. This will be happening over the course of this year and next year.
I spoke directly to the engineering department to clarify the plans for the active transportation network, and it has been confirmed that "commercial parking along Esquimalt Road is in conflict with the bike lanes" which will be installed along Esquimalt Road.
This means that the businesses along Esquimalt Road, specifically approaching Admirals/Esquimalt roads will lose ALL commercial parking for our customers. This means LESS accessibility to ALL the businesses here, and ESPECIALLY for those with disabilities (ie. a very large number of my patients).
I am the biggest proponent of an active lifestyle. I talk about it every day. Not one of my patients could deny that. But I don't see a point in operating my business in a commercial area like this, or even continuing to own my business here, if the municipality is making a move to directly impact the accessibility of my business. This is my own opinion, but it can be applied to a lot of other business owners here too. We do not have commercial parking lots at this end of Esquimalt Road, while other areas of Esquimalt Road do (ie Country Grocer plaza, Shoppers Drug Mart Plaza).
Please consider writing to the Esquimalt council to voice any concerns you have about losing commercial parking zones in Esquimalt. If the public has any ideas for gatherings or ways to bring our voices together as a larger group, I would be open to participate. (Unfortunately, I do not have time to put this kind of thing together, but I will do what I can as a participant).
I am an Esquimalt resident and business owner, but my voice as a business owner goes nowhere without the help of the public.
Thank you for reading, and please feel free to comment or share.
Sincerely,
Dr. Carly Youlton
