On Oct 10 (Friday), the British Columbia Legislative Assembly in Victoria lit up in green to mark World Mental Health Day 2025. BCACC staff were at the venue sporting sweatshirts with the message 'Be Kind to your Mind' - our message this year. Through this campaign, we hope to create lasting awareness, break stigmas around mental health, and remind the public that help from qualified professionals, is at hand.

The BCACC is grateful to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia for considering our request.

The BCACC is once again shining the spotlight on World Mental Health Day (Oct 10 - Friday) by organising the illumination of 2 prominent landmarks in BC - The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia (Ceremonial Entrance, Front Fountain, Back Fountain of the Parliament Buildings, Confederation Garden Park Fountain and Waterfall) and the Vancouver Convention Centre (District markers and Cauldron arms).

Tomorrow, from dusk to 1 AM, these locations will be illuminated in green - the colour associated with World Mental Health Day. Through this initiative, we hope to remind the public that mental health awareness is important, break the stigma, and reassure them to "Be Kind to your Mind".

We are grateful to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia and the 'Northern Lights Display' events committee for considering our request and helping us mark this day in a memorable way.

The BCACC would like to pay respect and gratitude to Dr. Elder Roberta Price, who was recently welcomed as an honorary member of the BCACC. Dr. Elder Price has been a teacher to us, someone we continue to learn from and seek guidance from in the space of Indigenous learnings, connection, and respectful action. We are deeply grateful for her wisdom and leadership and privileged that she accepted honorary membership with the Association, this fall.

Dr. Elder Roberta Price is a beloved Coast Salish Elder, educator, and advocate. For over 30 years, she has worked alongside communities, Vancouver Coastal Health, and universities to bring cultural safety, ceremony, and traditional teachings into health care and education. Through her leadership and lived experience, she has guided countless people on their healing journeys with compassion, strength, and humility. Awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws from UBC, Dr. Elder Price continues to share her wisdom in the spirit of reconciliation, respect, and hope for future generations.

We are deeply honoured to recognize Dr. Elder Roberta Price as an honorary member of the BCACC.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is a public commemoration of the tragic and painful history of the residential schools and recognises and honours its survivors, families, and communities.

As BC's leading association of clinical counsellors, we have a responsibility to rise to the calls to action within the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report.

How we are taking action:

- Organising workshops for clinical counsellors and allied health professionals to enhance their ability to provide cultural safety for Indigenous Peoples. Courses include Mobilizing Cultural Safety and Humility in Professional Practice taught by Len Pierre, Educator and Indigenous Cultural Safety Coordinator and Working with Cultural Diversity in the Therapeutic Setting taught by Dr. Myrna Lashley, McGill University.
- Engaging with the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) to increase the number of Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) providing services to FNHA as there is a lack of available providers.
- Creating a standard on Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility & Anti-Racism Standard.
- Instituting the Joan Campbell Award since 2021 to increase Indigenous and other under-represented groups amongst our membership.
- BCACC’s Entry to Practice Competency Profile for RCCs in British Columbia includes content that has an Indigenous-specific focus.
- BCACC is continuing this work to look at how its other policies may be revised to integrate and consider an Indigenous-specific context.

We respectfully acknowledge that this is just the beginning and there is a lot of work to be done. Please note that our office will be closed today.

Our Story

We’re setting the standards for public confidence.

The BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) was founded in 1988 and is the professional association that represents Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC) in our province. What does this mean for members of the public? It means that if you receive counselling services from an RCC, you can have confidence in their experience and qualifications – that they have met the highest standards of their profession. Today, we represent over 4,100 Registered Clinical Counsellors across BC.
