NEWS UPDATE: The BCACC supports the Canadian Mental Health Association's (CMHA) calls for the federal government to renew its 10-year, $5 billion investment in mental health and addictions services made in 2017. A renewal in federal funding will prevent service cuts and ensure continued support for those seeking care.

Earlier this month, the CMHA commissioned a survey to gauge the public's support for public funding of mental health care. 81% of surveyed Canadians supported continued federal government funding. You can read CMHA's press release here - https://cmha.ca/news/canadians-want-mental-health-funding-to-continue-new-polling-shows/

**Statement by BCACC CEO, Michael Radano**

"BC is home to 5.7 million people and 1 in 5 residents are affected by mental health issues annually. As BC's largest association of clinical counsellors and psychotherapists the BCACC has always advocated for better accessibility and quality of care.

Even though our 9,000+ RCCs are on most insurance and employee benefits plans in the province, federal funding would ensure that those who aren't covered do not have to pay out of pocket to avail mental health support. We look forward to supporting the CMHA and other associations in any way we can to ensure British Columbians have immediate support when they need it the most"

Nearly 90% of counsellors in BC are Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs). If you are an insurance/service provider/organisation looking to add RCCs to plans, please reach out to our team: advocacy@bcacc.ca

Today, the BCACC would like to take a moment to remember the victims, families, and their communities affected by the deadly attack at the Lapu-Lapu festival in Vancouver one year ago on April 26, 2025. We acknowledge the grief and pain that continues to be felt, and stand in solidarity with all those impacted by the tragedy as they navigate healing and remembrance. We also remember one of our own, Kira Salim, RCC who lost their life that day.

Helpful resources:

Following the tragedy, the BCACC organised a free public webinar - 'Caring for ourselves and our communities after loss'. You can view the recording here - https://bcacc.ca/caring-for-ourselves-and-our-communities-after-loss-video/

If you need mental health support, BCACC's Find a Counsellor tool can connect you to a counsellor in your area - https://bcacc.ca/counsellors/

Do you work with children, youth, and families? This workshop is for you.

Counsellors are often caught between the requirement to report to protective agencies and our desire to maintain therapeutic alliance and engagement in counselling.

Our upcoming workshop 'Duty to Report: Responsibilities and Pathways' will give an overview of the legislative responsibilities for reporting when a child or vulnerable adult is at risk of harm, outline the counsellor’s role in the reporting process, and provide practical tips that may increase the effectiveness of a report and enhance safety of vulnerable persons in the process of investigation.

Thank you, Kelowna! On Saturday, the BCACC wrapped up its first Regional Workshop of the year, and what a delightful experience it was. We enjoyed meeting with our members, mental health practitioners, healthcare workers, academics, and students in the interior for two days of learning, insightful conversations, and meaningful connections. We ended the week on a positive note and return with new ideas, renewed focus, and exciting collaborative opportunities in the region.

A special thank you to our members, staff, sponsors, and exhibitors for their dedication in ensuring the event was a success.

Next stop, Victoria!
