Peace of mind comes from knowing your loved one is in safe hands. đź’™

When you choose home care, you aren't just looking for help—you're looking for trust.

At Ohana Care, we know that safety and quality aren't just buzzwords; they are the foundation of everything we do. That’s why we are proud to be Accredited by Accreditation Canada in Alberta.

Why does this matter for your family?
It means our care isn’t just based on good intentions—it’s backed by rigorous national standards. From our hiring practices and safety protocols to how we manage medications and document care, every step has been independently verified to meet the highest levels of excellence in Canada.

We hold ourselves to these standards because we believe your family deserves the same level of care and safety we would want for our own.

Reliable, safe, and compassionate care—that’s the Ohana promise.

Your care plan shouldn't be a checklist—it should be a conversation.

"How do you make sure this care is actually personalized?"

We get this question all the time. At Ohana Care, we believe that a care plan isn't just about ticking boxes for tasks like "shower" or "meals." It's about understanding the person behind the needs.

In this clip from Caring Conversations, Melissa Therrien, RN, explains our approach to building care plans that truly fit:
đź’™ We Listen Deeply: We don't just ask blunt questions; we have real conversations to understand your loved one's history, preferences, and personality.
đź’™ We Observe: Our experienced team notices the subtle cues that might be missed on a standard form.
💙 We Collaborate: We draw on the collective expertise of our nursing and care team to adapt the plan as needs—and feelings—change.

We tailor the care to who you are, not just what needs doing. Because care isn't about tasks. It's about people.

Trust isn't given instantly—it's built with every visit.

"Here's my dad, deal with it."

Sometimes, families are at their breaking point when they call us. Other times, they are hesitant, unsure if bringing in a caregiver is the right choice.

In this clip from Caring Conversations, Melissa Therrien, RN, and Liz Lewington, LPN, discuss what building trust looks like from a nurse's perspective. It’s not always immediate, and that’s okay.

How do we build trust?
🤝 Education: Helping families understand what is happening with their loved one (like explaining that a behavior is the disease, not the person).
🤝 Communication: Keeping the lines open, listening to feedback, and being transparent about how visits are going.
🤝 Patience: Whether it takes days or months, we work at the family's pace to prove that we are there to make life better, not harder.

Ultimately, our goal is simple: To let you go to sleep at night knowing your loved one is safe, comfortable, and cared for.

"Will we get the same caregiver every time?"

It’s one of the top questions families ask us, and for good reason. Letting someone into your home to care for a loved one requires immense trust.

In this clip from Caring Conversations, Melissa Therrien, RN, and Liz Lewington, LPN, explain how Ohana Care prioritizes consistency and continuity in every care relationship.

Why does consistency matter?
đź’™ Predictable Faces: We work hard to match you with a consistent team so your loved one sees familiar, friendly faces.
đź’™ Building Trust: Real relationships take time. Consistent care allows bonds to form, making care feel less like a service and more like family.
đź’™ Better Outcomes: When a caregiver knows a client's routine, preferences, and personality, they can spot small changes in health or mood that a stranger might miss.

We don't just fill shifts; we build relationships.

They might forget your face, but they won't forget how you make them feel.

When caring for someone with dementia, your approach is everything.

As discussed in this clip from Caring Conversations, even when short-term memory fades, the emotional core of a person often remains intact. They may not remember exactly who you are or what you said five minutes ago, but they will remember how you made them feel.

Our recommended approach?
✨ Connect before you correct. Instead of forcing reality or arguing facts, meet them where they are in their reality.
✨ Focus on the feeling. Approach with calmness, respect, and kindness.
✨ Redirect with care. If they are distressed, guide them to a happier topic or activity rather than trying to use logic to explain why they are wrong.

It’s not about being "right"—it’s about maintaining connection and dignity.

Is dementia just a "normal" part of getting older?

We hear this question often, and the answer is important: No, dementia is definitely not part of the normal aging process.

While many people assume memory slips are just a natural part of aging, there is a distinct difference between occasional forgetfulness and the signs of dementia. As Melissa Therrien, RN, explains in this clip from Caring Conversations, not everyone develops dementia, and it’s crucial to recognize the early warning signs that go beyond normal aging.

What should you watch for?
It often starts small—short-term memory loss or forgetting names—but can progress to more concerning behaviors, such as:
đźš© Getting lost in familiar places (like driving home from the grocery store)
đźš© Mood changes or increased frustration
đźš© Confusion with time or place

If you’re noticing these changes in a loved one, you aren’t alone, and support is available.
