Vagus nerve dysfunction means whole body dysfunction. Given that this is one of the major nerves in the human body responsible for so much of the brain-body communication.

Most notably the areas impacted are gut health (bloating, gas, nausea, poor digestion & absorption, IBS, SIBO etc.) and mental health (anxiety, depression, panic attacks etc.).

Every symptom has a root cause. Even something as "simple" as waking up at 3 am can be linked back to multiple systems in the body.

The goal is to find the primary imbalanced system and work your way towards how it is now impacted other areas of the body or life.

In the recent past I have had numerous conversations with women who believed they were "perimenopausal" due to something they saw online.

I am all for educating and empowering women. However, empowerment is rooted in love not fear. Education needs to be comprehensive not one dimensional.

There are so many systems in the body that send signals for years and are ignored. The hormonal system is often impacted as a result of other high priority systems being overridden for so long.

Your body prioritizes stress, whether it's a physical or mental emotional stressor. Hormonal decline especially at a younger age is a physiological response to stress. It's not a "natural" part of the aging process.

There are many women who are aging gracefully, symptom free and thriving. We need to begin to change our dialogue once again and reframe our thinking in order to allow women to finally feel intune and aligned with their bodies.

Inflammation is harmful if the root cause is harmful. This can include an abundance of inflammatory bacteria in the gut that cause neuroinflammation (inflammation in the brain) and systematic inflammation (inflammation in the rest of the body).

Dampening the inflammatory response at the wrong time or excessively can lead to further health complications and impact the body's natural healing process.

The point is to address the root cause of the inflammation and not just throw an anti-inflammatory over it hoping for the best.

If you feel frustrated because you can't seem to get anywhere with your mental emotional state or, the interventions that you have tried so far have been mediocre at best, you need to look into your body's biochemistry and physiology.

I like to start with a comprehensive gastrointestinal workup with nearly all of my patients.

Since the gut is the root of nearly every dysfunction in the body.

To this workup we often add basic nutritional analysis which can include blood work or an organic acids test.

The point is, a thorough workup needs to be done so that our approach moving forward is focused and effective.

If you feel bloated every now and again or, you are able to pinpoint a specific food trigger that causes you to feel bloated, this is not something that would raise an immediate red flag.

However, if something as simple as a glass of water makes you feel bloated then you should consider investigating that a bit further.

Feeling bloated or distended most of the time is absolutely not normal.

Most people have been bloated for so long that they no longer remember what it feels like to not be bloated.

I recently had a patient who, after the second round of her digestive protocol, reported a 60-70% reduction in her bloating. She said that even her coworkers were mentioning how she looked like she had lost weight, when in fact it was just the bloating that had resolved.

Moral of the story is, bloating is not normal and there is always a solution to any health concern you may be dealing with. You just need to be committed to the journey and be open to letting go of the identity a condition has created for you.

Treating the root cause and the person as an individual means that if five people come into our clinic for a headache, all five are walking away with a completely different plan.

When I say "whole human healing" this means determining exactly what resulted in a state of disharmony for each person. This can include mental/emotional, physiological, genetic, environmental and even spiritual causes.

Treating the root cause means reversing the disease not just dampening or suppressing it with supplements or medication.

As naturopathic doctors we have extensive training in nutrition. With that comes a good awareness of various therapeutic diets.

What I found for myself personally was that I felt an initial pause when it came to implementing any therapeutic diet. With each year of practice I was more and more resistant using most prescription diets.

My resistance was partly due to my personal love for food. I didn't want to create a negative experience for patients by telling them to cut out foods that they loved.

I remember the last time I used the autoimmune diet with a patient who was really struggling with her health. Watching this individual feel completely lost in terms of what to eat and the anxiety this was causing her I decided that these approaches are just not my style of practice.

What I do instead is, I tell my patients that our first priority should be to optimize their gut microbiome. When you have a healthy abundance of beneficial gut bacteria you should be able to eat nearly all foods with no issues.

True food sensitivities are not as common as we think they are. Each person's constitution is different and there might be a certain food that doesn't agree with your body but it should be 1-2 foods maximum. Not a laundry list of trigger foods.

If you are reacting to a long list of foods it's most likely the environment of your gut and not the foods you are consuming.

If you are dealing with a health concern that seems to improve only slightly and then regress, it may be because you haven't addressed your gut health.

I tell all of my patients, regardless of their concern (hormones, skin, mental health etc.) if we don't address the gut, you may only see 50% improvement.

Gut health is foundational for all systems in the body.

Over the years I have worked with several patients on various health concerns who weren't ready to look into digestive health and with most of these cases we would only achieved a portion of the results we wanted. The most significant and long-lasting results were seen once we addressed their gut health.

This is the first place to start with absolutely every case regardless of whether or not you have "digestive symptoms."

Gallbladder removal, due to gallstones, is one of the most commonly performed surgeries.

Risk Factors that increase your chances of GALLSTONES include:
⭕Improper diet - High-fat/high-protein diet
⭕Low physical activity
⭕Gut dysbiosis, intestinal permeability, or IBD
⭕Liver issues - toxins & pathogens
⭕Diabetes
⭕Medications (statins & estrogens)
⭕Obesity
⭕Toxin exposure
⭕Food poisoning

Prevention is key so that you don't find yourself in a situation where you are told that your only option is to remove your gallbladder. Especially now that you know the important role this organ plays in the body.

If you have had your gallbladder removed there are always ways to help support you by ensuring a proper diet and preventing some of the other complications that may occur.

Intermittent fasting may not be the best option for you if:

✔️You find that you are starving yourself during the day only to overeat later.

✔️You are a menstruating woman and find that you are constantly craving carbs or salty food.

✔️You are losing weight but find that slight variation is calories cause you to gain and hold onto weight.

✔️Feel hungry no matter how much you eat.

✔️Feel heavy and sluggish after eating.

If you continually override your natural hunger cues, your body will adjust to a new normal and stop sending you those cues. This is why, those who repeated skip breakfast, don't have much of an appetite in the mornings. Your body is now biologically primed to skip that meal.

Intermittent fasting will work for some, when done appropriately with an established understanding of nutrition and their body's physiological needs.

But, if you feel like it's a struggle for you personally. Don't feel pressured to follow something just because so many others are doing it.

Hope this helps.
