Introducing Andie Burrill & Q***r Keratin!

Q***r Keratin is the ongoing experimental care practice for nails and skin, provided by Andie Burrill (they/them). They have always had a special interest in skin care, community-building, accessibility, and authentic relationships. Their attention to detail, communication skills and deep empathy give them an advantage in a vulnerable setting such as body care. The goal of this practice is to provide otherwise inaccessible care to marginalized populations.

Andie’s services include care of skin, hands, and feet. This can include nail and cuticle care, body hair removal/treatment, extraction of ingrown hairs, and recommendations around ongoing home care. Their care focuses intentionally on the ways we can care for ourselves externally, which is intrinsically linked to our inner worlds and mental wellbeing. Oftentimes, care for these areas is overlooked, but our hands and feet are vital tools in our interaction with the world around us.

Here are just a few of the MANY things we've tackled this spring-like February using Community Acupuncture 🌸🌱🌸🌱

If you are unfamiliar with the wonders of Community Acupuncture, in a nutshell, it is acupuncture treatments offered in a supportive group setting at $30-60 sliding scale rates. We provide treatments consisting of distal points (arms, legs, head, ears) while comfortably lying in zero gravity recliner chairs.

Acupuncture is a dose dependent therapy and that the benefits are achieved by frequency, and less so by individual doses. Therefore, the
appropriate treatment plan is key in assisting the gradual process for resolving issues and promoting recovery. It becomes more accessible
for clients to access as much treatment as often as they need.

Community acupuncture = affordable and accessible holistic health care.

We frequently have clients omit the info on their BC Care Card when they create their account in JaneApp, but little do you know, you may be missing out on benefits you qualify for and your taxes paid for!

If you are a BC resident who registered with MSP, whose annual income is less than $42 000 and your income tax is up to date, you may qualify for Supplementary Benefits!

MSP Supplementary Benefits subsidizes $23 for 10 sessions of Acupuncture, Chiro, Physio, Naturopathic and Registered Massage. And at H&H, we offer direct billing for MSP!

What does that mean at H&H?
It means you will have access for up to 10 sessions of:
❣️ Community Acupuncture at a $12-32 sliding scale
❣️ Cupping & Gua Sha at a $22-42 sliding scale

All we need to determine if you are eligible:
❤️ Your full legal name (as it appears on your Care Card or ID)
🧡 Your phone number
💛 Your email address
💚 Your Personal Health Number (PHN)
💙 Your S*x (as it appears on your Care Card or ID)

If you are NEW to H&H, we will set-up a JaneApp account for you to determine eligibility or if you are RETURNING, we will simply update your account to determine eligibility!

Community Acupuncture is extremely helpful for supporting pre and post-natal conditions. It is natural, drug-free, minimally invasive and focuses on preventative care to ensure optimally positive outcomes, not to mention being accessible, affordable and community-based!

Acupuncture can do SO MUCH MORE than Labour Induction! The objective is to promote positive outcomes in the weeks leading UP TO childbirth as well as decreasing pain and complications during and after childbirth. Acupuncture can support and prepare the body for a more effective, natural vaginal birth. It has also been shown to decrease the incidence of complications such as the need for medical induction and/or cesarian section.

My Year of the Fire Horse started with hitting the ground running with the usual full and busy Community Acupuncture shift after a long weekend. Very grateful for our community keeping our chairs filled and believing in this life-sustaining modality, I couldn't think of a better way to kick off the Lunar New Year 🧧

I've had a disorienting and low few weeks as we entered the spring season, which according to the lunar calendar was early February. But just as the seasons steadfastly cycle and the cherry and plum blossoms have cracked open like they do every year, I intentionally prepared my home, clinic and my spirit for this transition. I look forward to what this dynamic and propulsive year has in-store.

I ended my year of the Wood Snake by attending my first Kan Geiko, Aikido winter intensive, in Clearwater BC, on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Simpcw. It was an exciting and physically challenging weekend that left my body achy and my heart inspired.

During Monday morning breathing exercises, a brief flashback of one of my countless hospital stays during 2019 appeared in my minds eye and I was momentarily overcome with emotion, then I could feel the sensation wash over me like a warm blanket. It's been such a long and difficult road to reaching some form normality living with medical PTSD and living in a semi-disabled body has been humbling and enlightening.

I look forward to seeing where the Fire Horse will take me in life, in my rooted and established practice of acupuncture, but also my new exploratory passion of Aikido. I am certain they will be a wise and reflective mirror for me to continue growing as an engaged human being and devoted practitioner of these two arts.

I know the world is currently on fire, but everywhere I look, people are resisting, creating and connecting for the greater good. And I will continue to support those in our community so they can continue doing what they do, grounded, present and regulated.

And BTW, we wear red for Lunar New Year ❤️‍🔥

This is another childhood favorite that I enjoyed during colder months, an especially popular dessert that we ate during Lunar New Year. These sticky rice dumplings (tang yuan), filled with slightly sweet black sesame and walnut paste, floating in a fragrant sweet ginger syrup are chewy, texturally satisfying, easily digestible and warming for your insides.

A simple, light and nutritious sweet treat that is ideal following the weeks of holiday feasting, rich, unusual foods and over-indulgence! Not to mention, it is gluten-free AND supportive for your hardworking Kidneys and Spleen.
