Bodywork can so profoundly alter the shapes, internal relationships and process of the organism because it supplies what every self-regulating entity requires: New, more complete, and clearer information.

Bodywork is information.

Listening, when it opens and we’re feeling safe enough, leads toward connection with other people.

Our listening opens through numerous portals. We think of it commonly as an auditory phenomenon, yet it passes through other portals as well. We listen with our ears, yes, but we also listen with our eyes, our minds, our hearts, our touch and upstream from all sensations and perceptions we listen with our autonomic nervous system.

Perhaps the most important factor in the therapeutic relationship is presence.

Presence creates the field for the therapeutic relationship.

Presence is a fundamental quality the therapist brings to the relationship and, as such, may be one of the most powerful forces in the healing process.

I appreciate Reggie Ray's perspective on tension in the body, viewed through the lens of Somatic Meditation and Buddhist teachings:

"Tensing up is a way of avoiding the unadorned experience and the discomfort it brings ego, whether that discomfort is physical or psychological; tension is our way of closing down experience and shutting off awareness. It is the somatic expression of us holding on to our small ego concept, our restricted left brain identity.

Any naked, unfiltered experience is initially felt to be painful and problematic; without thinking, we try to withdraw from it, evade and get away from it.

We do so by literally tensing up, and this tension is everywhere.

By relaxing, our awareness opens and we gain access to a fuller and fuller range of our human experience, which means our somatic experience."

- The Awakening Body

We all experience pain and painful situations, which cause our bodies to tense up in an attempt to avoid it. Coming to a place of relaxation, we are able to open. Massage therapy is an incredible way to sink into deep, rejuvenating relaxation.

We all know how amazing massage can be, how it relieves tension, helps to relax the body and mind and is incredible for repairing the physical body.

In The Body Keeps the Score, massage therapist Licia Sky answers Bessel Van Der Kolk's question in such a powerful way that speaks to the deep healing that massage therapy can offer:

“Just like you can thirst for water, you can thirst for touch.

It is a comfort to be met confidently, deeply, firmly, gently, responsively.

Mindful touch and movement grounds people and allows them to discover tensions that they may have held for so long that they are no longer even aware of them. When you are touched, you wake to the part of your body that is being touched”

“There is something in the experience of touch that is not merely sensory, but that is potentially revelatory as well”

– Deane Juhan, Touched by the Goddess

The language of touch is something we all instinctively communicate with. Handshakes and hugs reveal much about a person’s character and mood.

Safe, therapeutic and nurturing touch is healing on so many levels.

Helping people feel connected to their bodies, safely held and cared for is an honour.

“Healing involves a journey.

Therapists from every healthcare discipline discover steps in a lifelong process that lead them ever deeper towards the truth of life and the service of their clients.

Clients and patients learn about themselves and grow from the challenges of healing.”

I am deeply grateful to have discovered a modality that brings depth and expansion to my massage practice. With Craniosacral I tune in and listen deeply.
What is it that this body needs?
How can I be of service to this healing process?
What parts of the body require presence and awareness?
The body always guides the session, my job is to listen.
