Our Story
MOVE IS:
• an independent non-profit organization recently formed to answer the need of people with spinal cord injury, brain injury, MS, Parkinson’s, stroke, cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities that prevent them from going to a regular gymnasium.
SOCIETY HISTORY
It’s not often two dreams come true. Friends of PATH Spinal Cord Injury Society, an organization registered in January 2010 began with a mission to raise funds to assist people with spinal chord injury receive therapy. Hillary Acosta is a physiotherapist with a speciality in neurological disorders who for years pined for a specially equipped gym that her clients could go to like a regular fitness centre to improve their well being.
By April 2013 Friends of PATH founder Joanne Rogers realized PATH needed to expand its focus. Hillary’s name was given to her, and little did Joanne know that Hillary was the perfect person to share her dream of filling this social need.
Joining together, the Friends of Path board expanded, the new name Move Adapted Fitness and Rehabilitation Society was chosen and thousands of dollars of equipment donated to the new space and the transition is underway. Another donor stepped up to the plate and covered the rental of space for a year.
WHY MOVE?
• Regular exercise improves quality of life and speeds recovery. Regular exercise reduces the risk of developing secondary complications like weight gain, pressure sores, pain, depression and more.
• To help the people that cannot afford a consistent assisted exercise program
• To provide a facility where all can work in an environment that is geared to their special need: comfortable, enjoyable, safe and professional.
MOVE’S FACILITIES:
• MOVE’s fitness space includes specialized equipment, space and assistance with transfer from a wheelchair plus trained and qualified staff and volunteers to assist with all levels of physical disability.
HOW MOVE WILL OPERATE:
• Membership fee to just use the gym will be on par with the community centres $60/month and $15 drop in per day
• One-on-one hands-on training sessions will be $50/hour $25/30 minutes
• Every prospective member will be interviewed and if there is further concern about their level of competency with the facility, they will need a formal assessment at additional cost
• A fitness program will be developed for each participant to follow.
• People accompanying their loved ones can also exercise at the same time for the same fee.
