Meet Dr. Dhaliwal, Chiropractor
Dr. Surdeep Dhaliwal graduated from Life Chiropractic College West with a Doctorate of Chiropractic in March 2019. Dr. Dhaliwal is a principled Gonstead Chiropractor who serves his patients in sunny Castro Valley, California. The Gonstead Method of Chiropractic uses a thorough analysis of the patient and full-spine x-rays to provide the most specific care achievable. Less than 1% of all chiropractors utilize this approach due to the extensive training and learning required outside of chiropractic college. Dr. Dhaliwal is on his way to receiving his Gonstead Diplomate which is a designation achieved post-graduation after 3+ years in practice.
Growing up in Malton, Ontario (Canada) Dr. Dhaliwal was heavily involved with sports, playing soccer, basketball and football in his youth. He played high school and competitive varsity level football in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL). His love for sports continued off the field when he went back and coached high school football as the defensive coach for three seasons and then later moved on to coach adult mens soccer for another three seasons. Dr. Dhaliwal believes that sports is the best analogy to life, because it teaches so many different life lessons.
In October of 2008 Dr. Dhaliwal was working out with the university football team and injured his lower back doing heavy squats. “I had played pick-up basketball for two hours and then jumped into the weight lifting program with the team. There was too much weight on the bar, I went down with it and hit a roadblock coming up so I extended my lower back to get the weight moving again, and that’s when my lower back locked up”. He finished the workout but the next morning he couldn’t move without severe pain. What followed next was 12 weeks of physical therapy where he rehabbed his injury. It helped to strengthen his core and take some stress off his lower back, but once the therapy stopped, what started was a vicious cycle of pain and recovery. This is a common cycle that many people who have injuries go through, there is a period of pain relief, followed by some sort of incorrect movement that aggravates the injury and then a period of pain. On and on this cycle went for years. It wasn’t until Dr. Dhaliwal received his first chiropractic adjustment that he realized that he did not have to live with low back pain for the rest of his life.
Dr. Dhaliwal’s inspiration to go to chiropractic school came from watching YouTube videos of the Gonstead practitioner, Dr. Ian Rossborough. Between these videos, and Dr. Dhaliwal’s personal benefit from receiving Gonstead adjustments, he realized that he needed to help as many people as possible experience the benefit of a clear and functioning brain and body. Throughout his schooling, Dr. Dhaliwal trained his craft through the Gonstead method, and eventually became president of the school’s Gonstead club. He has worked with hundreds of students through the club, as well as an intern program run by Dr. Robert Katona. It is Dr. Dhaliwal’s goal to train as many students as possible so that the Gonstead method may be spread to as many people as possible.
