You learn something new!

I’m a yoga teacher, among other things. Here’s why I no longer say “Namaste” at the end of my classes…or at all!

I encourage you to read this, and reflect on what will be new information for some of you! Then do what you feel is right.
⠀
Namaste is used everywhere, from yoga classes to endings on newsletter emails sent by well-meaning Western yoga people.
⠀
But Namaste does not mean what we think it means. It does not signify “the light in me bows to the light in you,” nor anything else that could be considered spiritually reverent.
⠀
It was/is a more formal greeting in India, something you’d say when walking into a business meeting.
⠀
Namaste is akin to “Greetings”. It’s morphed into a more common “hello”, too.
⠀
So here we are, Western yogis/yoginis with good intentions - very somberly ending our classes with “hello there”, as if it somehow seals the spiritual deal.

It’s also not pronounced “Nah-mah-STAY” but rather more like “nah MUSTH-ey”.
⠀
When we want to honor the origins and heritage of a practice that has now moved throughout the world, we should at the very least say any Sanskrit words properly if we need to say them at all, and their original meaning should definitely match how we translate them to our students.

I learned, I shifted. I removed Namaste.

Holding on to tradition for its own sake, when the tradition is actually incorrect, is not more important than listening to the core culture, and mindfully evolving.

I now end my classes with other options, like “Circle your arms up, gather all the fresh energy and inspiration of your practice to you, then bring your palms together to seal it deeply inside as you bow to your efforts today. You rocked it!”

Whatever you finish your practice - or your next yoga email - with, I recommend choosing something that correctly expresses: “The light within me, bows to the light within you”

So its 2021! The year of taking care of ourselves & our environment. As I venture in the world of vintage jewelry, I've been taken with the romance of older pieces and creating a look! For me, its been boho with lots of long necklaces and a a return to earrings. I am, and will always be an Aromatherapist. This article sums up all the reasons not to ingest essential oils. On that note, I see a lovely glass of lemon water in my immediate future (with a slice of yummy meyer lemon)...

So just a reminder about essential oils.

Essential oils considered to be “antiviral” are not universal virus killers.

“Antiviral” means that a compound inhibits the proliferation of a virus, while “virucidal” means a virus is destroyed or deactivated. In many instances, essential oils may be effective in killing one specific virus, but not another.

So during these times, I have been sewing a lot! Mostly masks and tarot bags. Both of which are available at Triple Spiral in Fan Tan Alley, and directly through me. Since March, all my masks (unless custom requested), are three layers. Two layers of cotton and a middle layer of polypropylene. with a sewn in nose piece. I will mail them out! Working on a display page of masks and bags that are available. So I hope everyone is safe, well and as happy as possible! It's definitely a difficult time. I am not doing any large scale aromatherapy work right now, although I am always available for consults or custom blending. That said, I've been having a rough few days and while treating my sore muscles (bad sleep I think) with some lovely blends, my mind is tired and foggy. So I just popped the diffuser on, and put a drop each of Douglas Fir, Lodgepole Pine, and Fir Balsam - instant brain relief! I think just the smell of those lovely trees gives instant Ojas (that wonderful feeling of being in nature - that juiciness of life). Do what you can to make you feel better - that's really important now!!

Greetings All! My apologies for not updating this page often. I have been trying to adjust to life on the West Coast and not been working publicly with either my Yoga or Aromatherapy for quite a while. I do need to change this. During this time of Covid-19 issues, I have decided to not promote my aromatherapy services or yoga as it puts people at risk. If people are interested, I am thinking of putting on an online Aromatherapy 101 session - where I could answer questions and give a short course on safety and use of basic essential oils. If anyone is interested, please let me know by commenting here. If I have enough interest, I will set something up. This will be a free class.

Passing this information on - It is one of my favourite oils. Beside the sustainability issues currently, I do caution with use of this oil. From experience, it can open up a whole lot of emotions and trauma that the user may not be willing to look at. I highly recommend not using with open groups or people that you are not familiar with. Ensure you are prepared to have support available for people if you are using it in group work (as well be aware of this when working with it for yourself). The connections this plant offer are amazing, but being ready for those connections is important too.

Spikenard is at least as endangered as Rosewood, which is a slow-growing rainforest tree and is not easy to cultivate. It is important to source ethically.
