It is very common to see Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism together...but also not necessarily.⠀
⠀
Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease where the body essentially attacks the thyroid gland, this often can result in hypothyroidism. ⠀
⠀
Hypothyroidism is where the body doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). Hypothyroidism tends to happen over time and is most common in women.
⠀
Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism have similar symptoms like brain fog, weight gain, fatigue, etc.⠀
⠀
If you've been told that you have hypothyroidism but don’t know if you have Hashimoto’s, ask your doctor to check TPO antibodies - these are the antibodies that would be produced with Hashimoto's. It can't hurt to know whats going on with your body even more!⠀
⠀
BTW, just because you have been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s does not mean that you have hypo!
⠀
Some ways of managing symptoms of hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's:⠀
⠀
1. Find what foods your body loves➡️ what foods is your body sensitive too?⠀
⠀
2. Heal your gut➡️ science shows that there is a strong connection between gut health and autoimmune conditions. ⠀
⠀
3. Manage stress➡️ stress is a significant trigger when it comes to symptoms, manage your stress. ⠀
⠀
4. Prioritise sleep➡️ sleep allows your body to heal and regenerate, not always possible but do your best to mange your sleep. ⠀
⠀
5. Work with a professional➡️ they can help guide you through it all and make it all less overwhelming for you, such as a qualified endocrinologist and/or holistic MD. ⠀
⠀
Check-in with yourself and your symptoms. What can you do today to feel better? Remember, healing is individualised and different for everyone💙
