About Weiming Zhao:
For over two decades, Weiming Zhao has embraced a remarkable daily ritual: painting en plein air, regardless of the weather. With easel, brushes, and a modest palette of oils in hand, he captures the fleeting beauty of the landscapes around him. Through his work, Weiming invites viewers to rediscover the extraordinary in the ordinary—the quiet majesty of familiar scenes that bind communities together. His art is a celebration of shared spaces, evoking joy, connection, and an abiding appreciation the natural world.
A native of Altay in Northwest China, Weiming relocated to Brandon, Manitoba, in the summer of 1991. Instantly captivated by the region’s charm, he found lifelong inspiration in its vibrant seasons and serene vistas. In 2003, driven by a profound love for his adopted home, he committed to painting daily—a discipline he has upheld for 21 years. This unwavering dedication has yielded an extraordinary legacy: a portfolio of over 7,000 works and 26 solo exhibitions.
Weiming’s paintings, prints, and calendars have garnered international acclaim, cherished for their ability to evoke warmth and nostalgia. His art transcends borders, resonating with collectors and admirers who find solace and delight in his interpretations of place and memory. In 2024, Brandon University honored his cultural contributions with an honorary Doctoral degree in literature, recognizing his role in enriching the city’s artistic identity. Today, Weiming remains a beloved fixture in Brandon, his brushstrokes forever weaving the threads of community, nature, and timeless beauty.
