Typically, it is common to not be able to understand everything your young child is saying! When your child is beginning to learn how to produce new words, it is going to take time before it sounds clear. 🗣️

Swipe below to see the percentage and age differences on how much your child is understood by familiar listeners (parent/caregivers) and unfamiliar listeners (someone who is not around your child as often). 👇🏻

If you find your child is extremely unintelligible (that is, you cannot understand most of what your child says), then it may be time to seek out a consultation from a speech-language pathologist.

Language builds SO quickly between 18 & 24 months! Because a toddler’s language is building at such a fast rate, it is not recommended to use the “wait and see” approach. Take advantage of this time that your toddlers brain is rapidly learning! 🧠

By 24 months, on average, a child should have at least 50 words in their vocabulary but they’ll typically be saying ~200-300.
