Whether they are actively serving soldiers, retired or released veterans, always-ready reservists, and especially those who are no longer with us, each and every one of them, at some point, agreed to risk their physical life and, if survive, also forever risk their emotional and psychological well-being - for the rest of us. These are an elite class of humans who are full of duty, service, protection, and love for anyone but themselves. Please, never forget. I am humbled and honoured to walk freely and safely in a society upheld by your sacrifices. A "Thank You" and a moment of reverent silence seems hardly enough...if only we can all also remember every day to "pay forward" among eachother what is modeled by your duty, love, and service to us... ✨

As the Christmas season unfolds every year, we encounter both those who are, on one hand, drawn to the exuberant exclamation of the season 🌟...and on the other hand those who (for various reasons) are more comfortable in reserved quietude this time of year🕯️...It can be challenging for the exuberant to relate to the reserved (and vice versa). Perhaps if we consider that Christmas is more a shared state of mind than a specific date on the calendar, there is indeed, peace...Wishing Christmas peace to all ✨🎁

Celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day! We are so lucky to have met and worked with people like Kimowan Ahenakew. She shared lots of her personal experiences and culture with us. You can see her perform traditional dances at Wanuskewin Heritage Museum.

What a great opportunity is it to be partnering once again with Wainwright FCS for this upcoming workshop. Join us!

Join Dr. Janine Nelson for this afternoon session exploring PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). This session is open to everyone but will be geared towards those who are supporting loved ones with PTSD, touching on topics such as caring for yourself and others. Using a trauma-informed approach, Dr. Nelson will also be covering topics such as: What is PTSD? How do we manage if we have been diagnosed? How do we manage if someone we love has it? There will be useful information for those who have been diagnosed, but also those who are living with trauma that is embedded in society today. This session will be formatted for information-giving as well as giving ample time for questions and conversation if participants desire.

Christmas truly is a wonderful time of year! 🎄
For some though, it can be a challenging time of year. I've known many who have, at some point in time, for one reason or another, been given a box of darkness...sometimes, only after years of their endurance, ingsight, and healing, that box of darkness ends up being the most meaningful gift they've ever received. The stress of the season combined with the pandemic can unitnentionally give us all a box of darkness during the holidays. So for those of us who are emotionally and physically drained; worried about the future or finances; homesick for family, friends, and traditions; trying to make magic for your kids; griveing loss; or just struggling to hold it all together amidst the darkness...Just hold on. Your gift is coming too.
Take a moment to relax, knowing your strength. Marvel at how far you've come. Revel in what you've accomplished and watch yourself manifest how you'll rise above next. Here's to giving and receiving what we all want - peace, love, light, and hope. Merry Christmas, all! ✨

A colleague of mine is conducting her doctoral research on rural mental health...I'm reminded of how grateful I still am to all those who volunteered to participate in my own similar research not so long ago. Please, if you feel so inclined and meet the study criteria, consider being part of shaping the future of mental health services in rural Alberta communities. ..And, just a reminder, if you find you are at all interested in volunteering for the study and you are or have been a client of mine, I am not originally from Wainwright. 😉

When I started my career in mental health, it was the mid 90's...not only did I not have much awareness of nor experience with PTSD, the awareness and understanding of PTSD within the field was emerging at best...we've both come a long way over the years...PTSD has become very dear to my heart - whether I'm in a treatment session with a veteran or first responder, a survivor of abuse, violence, or natural disaster, or even just holding space for a traumatized friend or family member - it's truly become one of my passions to continue to support those who have invisible scars, while be part of evolving the field of psychology's and society's approach to PTSD. 💙🧠
