Canada formally notified of upcoming Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal on missing/disappeared Indigenous children and unmarked graves.

The 57th session of the Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal will take place in Montreal from May 25–29, 2026. Initiated by the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal and a network of researchers, advocates, and legal experts, the Tribunal will examine evidence of Canada’s responsibility for the establishment, operation, and maintenance of the Indian Residential School system, as well as serious human rights violations, including acts that may constitute genocide and crimes against humanity.

The Tribunal has formally notified Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Canadian Embassy in Rome, providing details of the public hearings and the opportunity for the State to participate.

The State of Canada is being called to answer for longstanding policies and practices that have caused profound harm to Indigenous Peoples. These include, but are not limited to, forced and coercive sterilizations, and the disappearance and unmarked burials of Indigenous children.

Survivors from the Mohawk Institute will be among those participating in this tribunal. This process will bring forward testimony from Survivors and experts in pursuit of truth, accountability, and justice on an international stage.
