Though deeply damaging to members, institutional betrayal is rarely acknowledged. So why is it ignored, continues to go unchallenged, and what tactics are used to maintain the silence?

DARVO Tactics:
Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender

Simply put, this is a well-worn tactic used by organizations to silence critics, where the silence perpetuates harm to their members and discourages others from speaking out.

If you're scratching your head wondering, "Why would organizations want to do this to their members?" here are only a few reasons.

*Organizations fear reputational damage and legal consequences so they need the tactics for self-preservation.

*We're made to believe that members who are injured and harmed lack the power to demand accountability from their organizations, so power dynamics are hard at work.

*From day one we're taught to trust our organizations, not question them, so our cultural norms stay well in place.

And when those norms are challenged, DARVO steps in to keep the silence intact.

Any organization - be it government, policing, military, healthcare, or school - has a moral and practical duty to care for the individuals who contribute to its functioning.

When a system doesn't honour the sacrifices and efforts of its own people, it erodes loyalty, dignity, and performance. Consider burnout in healthcare professionals, undervalued teachers leaving the profession, and first responders and veterans dealing with inadequate support. These are symptoms of systemic failure.

A healthy system builds a culture of care, because it recognizes that the strength of any structure lies in the wellbeing of the people holding it up.

PTSD isn’t visible. It doesn’t announce itself with a scar or a bandage, and it doesn’t fit the narrow depictions in movies or books. It screams in silence, it walks restless at night, arrives in moments of panic, and spins in the unstoppable thoughts. It is an unwelcome stranger who lurks in the shadows of everyday life until it becomes part of you or someone you love.

PTSD doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care whether you’re strong or resilient. It doesn’t care whether the trauma was years ago or yesterday. It doesn't care if you have a family or a job. It settles in, uninvited, shaping our thoughts, emotions, and physical reactions in ways that feel impossible to control. The worst part? Many of us don’t recognize it in ourselves or others until it’s deeply entrenched.

But it doesn't have to win. PTSD can be managed. It can be treated. It can be faced. Healing is possible, but with therapy, support, and understanding. The more we acknowledge it, speak about it, and stand against the stigma, the more we help those who need it. Here, there is no hiding. Here, there is no shame. You're included, accepted, and wanted exactly as you are, exactly where you're at. Here, you don't have to battle it alone.
