Paying for therapy can look different for different people.

Some of the ways clients access counselling include:

• Extended health benefits or health spending accounts through work, which may cover sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist or a Registered Social Worker, depending on your plan
• NIHB (Non-Insured Health Benefits) coverage for eligible First Nations and Inuit clients
• Working with our supervised intern therapist at a lower cost

Understanding what your coverage includes can feel confusing, especially when plans use different language. If you’re unsure what applies to you, we’re happy to help you talk it through and explore what options may be available.

At Cornerstone Counselling, we know finances are part of the decision. You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out. We’ll meet you where you’re at and help you take the next step.

It’s a question many people have, and it’s a fair one.

A therapy session includes more than just the time spent in the room. It also reflects:

• years of training and ongoing professional education
• license registration and supervision
• time spent preparing for sessions and documenting care
• creating a private, comfortable space that feels safe and welcoming
• limits on how many clients a therapist can see to remain present and engaged

This isn’t meant to make therapy feel out of reach but to offer some clarity around the cost.

At Cornerstone Counselling, we value transparency and understand that affordability matters. We aim to help people explore support in ways that feel realistic.

If you’re curious or unsure, a conversation is always welcome.

Even when you’re ready to talk to someone, cost can make taking the next step harder.

Money stress is real, and wondering whether therapy is affordable doesn’t mean you don’t value your mental health. It usually means you’re trying to make decisions based on your reality.

What many people don’t realize is that it’s okay to talk openly about cost with a therapist. Therapy doesn’t have to look the same for everyone, and things like frequency, pacing, and goals can often be discussed in ways that feel more manageable.

Therapy works best when it feels sustainable both emotionally and financially.

If cost has been holding you back, you’re not alone. Support can start with a conversation.

Relationships don’t struggle because people don’t care enough. They struggle because stress, miscommunication, and old patterns get in the way of connection.

Feeling strained or distant doesn’t mean your relationship is failing; it often means something important needs attention.

Therapy isn’t about fixing what’s broken; it’s about helping slow things down, understand what’s happening and reconnect in ways that feel more steady and sustainable.

When relationships feel tense or stuck, urgency often takes over.

The need to be heard now.
The pressure to fix things now.
The fear that if it doesn’t change quickly, it won’t change at all.

Urgency can sound like criticism, defensiveness, or pushing harder, even when what we’re really longing for is closeness.

Slowing down doesn’t mean avoiding issues.
It means creating enough space to respond rather than react.

Couples therapy can help partners notice when urgency has taken over and learn how to pause and approach each other with more clarity and care.

Support is available.

On average, couples wait over two years before seeking support for relationship concerns.

Many wait because:
• they believe problems should be handled privately
• there’s stigma around couples therapy
• they hope things will resolve on their own
• they don’t want to wait until there’s a crisis, but often end up doing just that

As we move toward a holiday that’s often framed around romance and connection, relationship strain can feel more visible.

Couples therapy isn’t only for relationships in crisis.

It can be a space to slow things down, understand patterns, and reconnect earlier.

Support is available now with therapists who can tailor an approach that fits.

Burnout doesn’t always look dramatic.
Often, it develops gradually and quietly.

You might notice:
• ongoing exhaustion that rest doesn’t fully relieve
• feeling emotionally flat, irritable, or checked out
• difficulty concentrating or making decisions
• pulling back from work or from people you care about
• a sense that your capacity keeps shrinking, even when expectations stay the same
• stress that follows you home and into your time off

When these patterns persist, they can signal burnout. It’s what happens when stress outpaces recovery for too long.

Over time, burnout often affects more than just work. It can show up in relationships as reduced patience, emotional distance, or tension, even when care and commitment are still present.

For some people, work stress doesn’t show up as panic or anxiety.

It shows up as dread.

They dread going to work.
They dread being at work.
They dread opening their inbox.
They dread the tasks waiting for them.
They dread certain coworkers.
They dread meetings that feel pointless and never-ending.

When dread becomes a regular part of the workday, it’s often a sign that stress has shifted from something temporary into something ongoing.

Burnout isn’t about effort or attitude. It’s what can happen when stress outweighs opportunities for rest and recovery over time.

Therapy can help clarify what’s contributing to burnout and support changes that make work feel more manageable.

Mondays can be hard, and at the beginning of the year, they can feel even harder.

January often comes with the hope of a fresh start, but for many people, the return to work brings a familiar wave of stress: projects being “circled back to,” and expectations picking up right where they left off. It can be discouraging and exhausting.

Ongoing work stress can lead to burnout, not because you aren’t capable, but because your system has been under strain for too long.

Work stress and burnout are real, and they don’t reflect a personal failure.

Therapy can provide support, help make sense of what’s happening, and develop ways of managing work stress that are more sustainable. We have therapists who work with individuals experiencing workplace stress and burnout.

Growth doesn’t always look like big decisions or bold declarations.

Sometimes it looks like:
– pausing before reacting
– noticing what you feel
– asking for support
– choosing rest when you’re tired

These moments matter.

As 2026 begins, we’re here to support change that is steady, compassionate, and sustainable, not rushed.

If you’re considering therapy this year, you don’t need a big reason to start.
Sometimes the desire for things to feel a little lighter or less lonely is enough.
