While Pepper is INCREDIBLY cute he is an absolutely terrible Thai Massage assistant 😤 -2/10 can’t even change a pillow case and is a HUGE distraction!!! How am I supposed to bring my dirty laundry up stairs when he’s looking at me like that??!!

If you haven’t met Pepper yet he is John (our osteopath’s) newest service dog in training. Check out for more info on the great work they do🥰

Hello! Thought I would pop on here and reintroduce myself since it’s been a little bit😬. My names Abbey, I’m an RMT in Waterloo, and I just celebrated 2 years of being in practice! Turns out once you’ve got a full schedule of treating it’s significantly harder to make time to post on your instagram🥲
I make absolutely no promises to be as active on here as when I first started but my goal is to be around at least a little bit more✌🏻
Hope everyone has a lovely day!

“So, why massage therapy?”

This is a question I get asked a lot and honestly, great question! Here’s how I usually answer it:)

In high school I was fascinated by anatomy and biology, it’s crazy how the human body works! I knew I wanted to continue to study those subjects somehow but I wasn’t sure what that path looked like. My grandma was a massage therapist so I always knew this profession was an option but I also considered going into forensics and even looked into being a mortician (kind of crazy I know😱 but Abby from NCIS was really my idol at that point).

I took two years off after high school: one to work full time and save up and the second to travel. I hung out in Europe and Thailand for while ✈️🌴. I am so happy I took those years off, not only was it an amazing experience but it gave me the time to figure out what I really wanted to do.

So in April 2018 when my plane touched down in Canada (in the middle of an ice storm no less) I applied to start school at the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy (CCMH) that fall and the rest is history!

I’m so happy I chose this profession. Not only do I have a tangible skill that I can pack up with me and take anywhere but I get to interact with amazing (living😉) people everyday. I get to share my love of anatomy and see the results of my work first hand, sometimes immediately, which is so rewarding. I love the freedom of being able to choose how I practice as well, what I want to focus on, and where and when I work.

And that is why I chose

Big shoutout to for posting her ‘why’ and inspiring me to do the same💕

I’m SO excited to announce that I’ve been invited to work as an RMT at the Women’s Wellness Weekend hosted at a place very close to my heart: Cairn Camp❤️

I grew up going to this camp, went through the LIT program, and continued to work there for the summer. I even have my ‘10 year paddle’ hanging in the lodge. The thought of going back already has me feeling so nostalgic🥲 I haven’t been back in at least 4 years! The picture in the background is even one I dug up from my archives (circa 2016, I think??).

DM me if you want more info on what it’s all about /how to sign up 😊

Weekend Description:

“Get away from the busyness of everyday life and spend a weekend dedicated to your physical, spiritual and mental wellness within a community of women, immersed in the beauty of the Muskokas. This weekend will feature a blend of session options, from high ropes and zip line, to yoga and mindfulness meditation, to crafting and canoeing, or even booking a massage - it's all up to you as to which elements of wellness you'd like to include in your weekend. Beyond activities, enjoy fresh and delicious homemade meals (that are made FOR you!), our cozy and rustic cabins in the forest, the care provided to you by Cairn staff, and, of course, a chance to breathe deeply. A rejuvenating fall weekend awaits!”

I am here to say that if you aren’t able to book in with me right away:

🔊add 🔊 yourself 🔊 to 🔊 the 🔊 waitlist!!!🔊

People move their appointments around ALL. THE. TIME.
I could check my schedule for next week right now and almost guarantee it will look different tomorrow or even in a couple hours. So save yourself, and pop into that waitlist. Just because you’re added doesn’t mean you will automatically be booked in, it just gives you first dibs when something openings up ☺️

INJURIES + MOVEMENT

This morning I had a client come in who had fallen on his shoulder about two weeks ago while diving for a ball in baseball. Hence the stock-photo-esque picture of me with ‘shoulder pain’ haha💁🏼‍♀️ Anyways we are here because he told me the first couple days after it happened he put it in a sling. To keep it safe, ya know? But then it started to feel like it was seizing up. So he took it out of the sling and started moving it around. All good movements: not weight bearing and in directions that didn’t hurt. And it started to feel better! And that my friends is a lesson that whenever you get hurt OR are feeling a hurt somewhere in your body MOVE IT.

Our first response when we get hurt is usually to stop moving that body part. But keeping it moving, safely and in pain free ranges is usually better for it! Movement increases circulation to that area and helps prevent adhesions from forming. You see our body is really smart because when we get hurt it will lay down extra enforcements in that area, so if we get hurt there again we’re protected and ready for it! This is great…except that these ‘protective adhesions’ usually do more harm than good. They can restrict movement and blood flow and overall disrupt the way your body needs to move.

SO you dive for the ball and land funny on your shoulder? Move it around, do some arm circle if you can.

You twist an ankle? Do some ankle circles, work on pointing and flexing your foot. If that hurts to much? Keep your foot totally relaxed and use your hands to move it. The passive movement is still really good for it!

Your low back is hurting? Go for a walk! Stretch it out!

As much as I’m a registered massage therapist and I know what I’m doing…You know your body best. And, I can’t read your mind.

This is something I talk about with all my new clients.

For example: I can feel if a muscle is tight. But I don’t necessarily know if it’s super tender for you, or maybe it’s shooting weird pains into your arm or leg, or maybe something just doesn’t feel right for YOUR body.

What happens to your body, and how it happens, is up to you. If you don’t like something or your not sure if something is supposed to feel the way it’s feeling, let me know! I will never be offended and I don’t know to change something unless you communicate these things with me.

The more you communicate the better treatment is for you, always☺️

This is a talk I like to have with all my new clients. I never want anyone lying on the table feeling like they have no control or input in their treatment. We are here to work as a team for your health. You and your input are the most vital part of this team✨

ALRIGHT gang I am so excited that after one camping trip, one case of insta identity theft, and one long drive fuelled by a lot of coffee I have come back to a very full schedule! I’m super excited to be back at the Coach House tomorrow and see everyone’s lovely faces🥰

My week is super packed but if you would like to squeeze in appointments that are still available for this week are:
-30 min on Thursday at 6:15

Hope everyone has a good week!

I’ve had a couple clients who are tentative to book a 90 minute appointment because they’re worried it’s ‘too much work’ for me. Honestly, I LOVE 90 minute appointments. I don’t feel rushed and almost always have time to thoroughly address everything that’s going on with you. So please never feel nervous about booking a longer appointment, if I didn’t like doing them they wouldn’t be an option😉

Also big shout out to Krista and the OG plant mama Lindsay for providing me with endless aesthetic photo opportunities 😌

I had a client ask me this the other day so I thought I would make a post about it!
Do massage therapist treat feet? YES.

I could tell you every single bone, muscle, nerve, and blood vessel in the foot. Or at least that’s what I tell my anatomy teacher when he asks if I still remember everything we learned in school haha. But in all seriousness RMTs are trained in treating all kinds of foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis, stress fracture recovery or tarsal tunnel syndrome just to name a few!

Feet are super under treated in my opinion, we walk around on them all day they deserve some attention!!!

So I conclusion if you have anything going on with your feet, including general pain or issues with walking/running/ any activity you may be participating in, your local RMT is a fantastic person to go to for treatment☺️

Alright gang lets talk about ✨low back pain✨

There are so many reasons for low back pain, however one of the most common culprits in my opinion is your GLUTES (yes those are the muscles that make up your butt).

So here’s the situation in your lower body:
-your hips are in charge of rotation
-your low back is in charge of flexion/extension (bending forwards and backwards).

Your glutes (there’s 3 of them- max, med, and min) sometimes get tight. Now considering glut med and min specifically are in charge of stabilizing your hips (a very big job) it’s totally understandable why they would tighten up. However when this happens our hips are no longer able to rotate properly. Which is their job.
So who has to take over rotation?! Your lower back. And like even the mildest mannered employee, it gets a little pi**ed off when it’s asked to do things outside it’s job description.

So this is why when you come in with low back pain I will sometimes recommend we treat your glutes, that way your hips can get back to rotating and your low back can stick to straight forward and backward bending and everyone is happy again🤓

if this post is something that resonates with you I would
1. Recommend you see an RMT but also
2. Suggest not only stretching but also STRENGTHENING your hip muscles (specifically glut med/min)

06/08/2021

Do you want to work on your posture but feel like no matter what you do your shoulders always hunch forward again? A lot of the time this is because your pecs, and the fascia surrounding your pecs, are tight! They’re so used to being in that slouched forward position it makes it really hard for you to get to and maintain that straight back/open chest!

You can ask your RMT to add pec work into your treatment, usually it looks exactly like this picture😊

Also I’m considering making some reels-specifically some for stretching your pecs and other postural muscles so keep ya eye out for those if your interested🤔👀

PS peep Jordyns lil sunshine tattoo on her right hand it’s literally the cutest thing🥰

06/07/2021

Okay so, I’ve had a couple people message me asking me if it’s weird or awkward if they book in with me. Whether it’s someone I haven’t talked to since high school, a friend of a friend, or a coworker from one of the many bars I worked at during college. And my answer to that is always: no, its not weird in any way, book in, I would love to see you☺️

The thing I always tell my clients before starting treatment is this is YOUR time. If you want to chat we can, if you want some peace and quiet we can do that to. Personally I believe silence can be healing😌

So please don’t let the daunting idea of making small talk with me for your entire appointment stop you from booking.

Also, anything and everything you share with me (including the fact that you even came in for an appointment) is confidential and protected by PHIPA. So no one will ever know you came in for an awkward hour of silences unless you tell them😉
